Building a casa in Z and need advice on furnishings.

by DanD, Wednesday, October 19, 2011, 08:57 (5124 days ago)

My wife and I are building a casa in Zihuatanejo with construction beginning early November. We want to buy all the furnishings locally in the Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa area to achieve an warm and authentic Zihuatanejo feel for our casa. We prefer rustic, but nice. I would appreciate advice from those of you who have done this before and can make recommendations on where we can look for these items. We will need:

1. Dining room furniture
2. Wall paintings and house decorations/handicrafts
3. Pool lounge chairs
4. Kitchen appliances
5. TV's and stereo equipment
6. King size mattresses
7. Bedding
8. Bar stools
9. Plates, glasses, silverware, barware, etc.
10. Large pots for flowers, plants and trees.
11. coffee tables

Thank you all for your help.

Here's where we shopped for our project:
Dining room furniture & barstools: on the road to Ixtapa there's a store that carries equipal furniture among other items; forget the name, it's on the right side leaving town. Much wooden furniture is made in Cuanajo, about 1/3 of the way between Patzcuaro and Morelia,
Paintings & other decorations: The shops in Casa Marina carry a lot of nice stuff, but we went to Morelia. There are 2 stores there near the cathedral which carry lots of folk art from Michoacan.
Appliances: Comercial Mexicana
Lounge chairs: brought from home.
Mattresses: Electra.
Bedding & towels: brought from home.
Flower pots: There's a place on the road to the airport which carries pots and plants.
Coffee table: we had ours made out of bamboo by Hanibal in La Madera, corner of Calle Adelita and Remedios.
Congratulations and good luck with your project.

Congratulations! We did this a few years ago. Most of our furniture came from the nice store next to Click. I'm sorry, but I'm drawing a blank on the name. They have very nice stuff, the people are great, but it is kind of expensive. It is next door to Click. We got some furniture and our mattresses from IZ Furniture. Jason is great. The mattress at our home in Troncones is much more comfy than our ones at home. Our televisions came from La Commercial. They always have good deals. Our washer and dryer came from a place out near the market in Zihua but across the street....I can't recall the name of it. It's right near the big corner. Coppel perhaps?

Have fun!

The store next to Click is called Calli Design. You'll find their link here in my website.

Bamboo Furniture

Don't know what kind of furniture you are looking for, but I am posting what was made for me there locally.[image]

Even the stand in the center of the palm trees was made there, along with the couch and love seat and the coffee table. Sorry my table and chairs for the dining room are not really visable but you get the idea. Several people have mentioned the place on the corner by Rufo's restaurant. Hanibel works with you for all sorts of stuff. He does a good job. I put the tile on the top of my coffee table myself. I wanted it to match the tile on my floor. Has worked out wonderfully for what I wanted. My furniture in the pictures is about 6 years old but I have some bamboo stuff that is probably more than 20 years old and still looks and functions great.

Thank you everyone! I will be flying in this weekend to finalize the plans and now have lots of great ideas to begin exploring. My time in Zihuatanejo has always been 7 days here and 10 days there and focused on the beach, bars, markets and restaurants. I can now spend my time on your recommendations so our retirement home is perfect. I thank each of you so much.

Who is your architect? We used Luis Treviño, who did a great job for us.

We are using a young architect named Sebastian Cordova. He has done most of his projects in Mexico City and the surrounding area, but we've seen his work and it is beautiful. He has a design flair similar to Carlos Desormoux and Enrique Zozaya and is an artist who really incorporates native materials in his design. Lots of stone, wood, palapa and handmade materials and native art in his design.

We have known his mother for 10 years and he recently added about 4,000 square feet of new construction to her Casa above Pacifica in Ixtapa. The original Casa was built 15 years ago by Desormoux and he has doubled its size down the mountain and has done it flawlessly....blending it into the original construction so anyone would think it was all built together. It is so beautiful, soothing and comfortable. An oasis of tranquility.

Sebastian is building a working studio on an adjoining lot and desires to expand his business in the Zihuatanejo area and make it his home the majority of the year. Perhaps we are taking a chance not going with a Trevino or Zozaya, etc, but we feel great about it and can feel his excitement for the opportunity. His daily involvement is very eveident... from the frequent correspondance, pictures and plan details we receive. His references were perfect.

Advice on wood

by ZihuaRob ⌂ @, Zihuatanejo, México, Thursday, October 20, 2011, 11:18 (5123 days ago) @ DanD

One thing I cannot stress enough that I hope you will strongly insist upon is that no illegally harvested wood be used in the construction of your home. Because it is so cheap and easy to use illegal wood, too many local architects have used it to build numerous homes and hotels. Enforcement is practically non-existent so it's up to each one of us to take care to do the right thing, as inconvenient and expensive as that may sometimes be.

As we always say "lo barato siempre cuesta caro".

Wow! Knowing that this occurs, I will demand that this doesn't happen with our casa. I'm not paying rock bottom prices and would never want to knowingly or unknowingly participate in anything like that. I will be meeting with the general contractor and architect on Monday and will insist. I have already asked for cost itemizations with receipts.

BTW: Say hi to your Mom for us. She has been our realtor and sometime advisor and has been great to work with. We have really enjoyed our time with her.

Glad I could make your day better and thank you for the warning. I know that dishonesty and thievery exist everywhere, but never thought about it applying to my little project. We would never want to benefit from destruction and theft.

Cascadas de Agua Azul

This photo and the one in my previous post were taken in a very special place in the Lacandona Rain Forest in the state of Chiapas called "Cascadas de Agua Azul", about 69 km from Palenque.

If you look carefully you'll see people on the lookout point on the right side of the photo, to give you an idea of the dimensions in this scene.

We purchased our electronics and kitchen appliances at the Elektra Store on Jose Morales. There's a smaller one on Benito Juarez but the the larger store has a better selection. Also purchased our mattresses from there. Paid a guy ($100 pesos) with a big truck outside the store and he delivered everything to our new casa in the Madera area (the Elektra salesman came along and helped unload!) Agree with everyone else on linens - bring your sheets and towels from home as the quality is much better, but resist bringing thick towels that you are accustomed to as they don't dry very well in the tropical climate. Agree with others about Hanibal on Calle Adelita and his furniture skills - he's great! Enjoy the adventure - you won't regret it!
