First - great resource - lots of really good info on the area. I'm currently researching vacation spots, and this makes me want to go to Zihuatanejo.

I'm interested in the food scene - already excited about cooking classes - but I'm having trouble finding specific info on Restaurant prices. All the restaurants I've looked at who had menus posted did not post prices, and I haven't seen a lot of restaurant comments that included what was paid for the meals (aside from "it's a bargain/great deal compared to US";). So, a few semi-specific questions:

1.) What would one pay for a taco at a local street-food taco vendor? How 'bout a local beer or a "standard" margarita?

2.) Let's say my wife and I and two teenage kids want to go out to the Zihuatanejo equivalent of a Chili's/Friday's/Appleby's-class of restaurant - one where you get sit-down service, but it's a few-times-a-week place (but, hopefully, with tasty local food, of course). What would we end up paying for a family of four?

3.) How about if I wanted to take my wife out for our anniversary - nice restaurant, beautiful view, great service, and (most importantly) incredibly delicious and interesting food, with a few drinks or wine - one of those few-times-a-year places. How much would that set the two of us back?

It's not that I'm trying to cheap out on this vacation (although if it were up to me, I'd survive on street food - probably wouldn't sit down at a table more than once a week - really love "grazing" through the outdoor markets), but a lot of comments talk about how inexpensive it it - I just want to get an idea about _how_ inexpensive - and, with Zihuatanejo's growing popularity, is it getting more expensive?

Sorry for the long first post... :)

Just as in the states, the prices run the gamut. AT papa loca you can get 5 tacos al pastor for 18 pesos and a beer for 12 pesos, so a very filling dinner for about $2.50.

The mid price restaurants--and there are a lot of them--probably run in the range of $10-15 for entrees. Think spots like Chendo's, Rufo's, Let's. Il Mediterraneo.

The fancier ones, that lean toward continental cooking and presentation are probably in the range of $20-$30 for entrees. (Mind you this is a guess-we don't go to them---I've got plenty of restaurants up here that do what they do--and I really enjoy the more basic food when in Mexico.

Think very carefully before you make your first trip. If you are like almost everyone else, after your first trip, you won't want to go anywhere else.:-)

I like that 30 pesos for 5 tacos al pastor and a beer deal - would that be the best place for (street) tacos in the area?

(edited) Meaning the _best-tasting_ (street) tacos?

PS to my last: we really like the tacos at Fru-Tacos. We stop there on the way to Comercial Mexicana. We walk along the right side of the canal and Fru-Tacos is on the far right corner where the road crosses the canal (past Plaza Kyoto). They have 16 different ingredients to choose from and the owner speaks excellent English. She's open for breakfast and lunch; not sure about dinner. Very inexpensive.

I think most of the regulars here think it's the best, but there are literally tons of taquerias to sample. Frostbite is right about Amuleto, folks rave about it. We've never been. About as "fancy" as we get is Peusto del Sol. The main attraction for us there is that a lot of the food is cooked table-side, including a to die for Caesar salad. If your kids have not been to a restaurant that does this, they would probably enjoy it.

Have you investigated lodging yet???

Have you investigated lodging yet???

Only briefly - appears that lodging is reasonable, also, but I'm really just in the very preliminary stages of this process. I'm sure I'll have more questions about that later.

So - reasonable lodging and food, spectacular-looking location, beaches? What's wrong with this place? Is it impossible to get to or something?

There's nothing at all wrong with it, but it's not everyone's cup of tea. Zihuatanejo, although it has recently become less so, is more laid-back than your typical beach side resort. While Ixtapa is, in it's way beautiful, you could really be at nearly any beach resort nearly anywhere in the world. Zihuatanejo has it's own particular charm and for us is the perfect place to relax. we always come down with grand plans to explore and then "Zihuatanitis" sets in and we spend a marvelous two weeks simply relaxing. When we were younger, we always thought that we'd never want to go to the same place twice. After our first trip to Zihuatanejo, we tried most of the other Mexican vacation spots, and found we were always comparing them to Zihuatanejo and they simple didn't measure up in terms of what we were looking for. I think that our upcoming trip will be our 11th year in a row.

If I remember correctly, you can eat at Ricomar in Pozole Alley for about US$2.50 to 3.00. We ate at La Casa Que Canta for US$150.00 for the 2 of us - and will never go there again. A really nice place for a once-a-year splurge is Amuleto, high above La Ropa. Great food and the best margaritas - IMHO - but pricey. Sorry, I don't recall what we paid, but you can contact them at: www.amuleto.net/ or on the phone: 544-6122. If you go, go early for the view; it'll blow you away.

I'd say I've generally paid about 40-70% of what I do in Boston for comparable food. You're looking at the higher end of the range if you eat at a gringo joint or on the beach. Prices might be higher in Ixtapa, but I rarely eat there.

Here are some current prices.

Dona Licha, an inexpensive but good sit down place near the market, serves good breakfast and lunch for 35 pesos a head and (not very far) up. Add a beer or other drink, tack on 10-15 pesos. So you're looking at $3.50. What's a combo meal at McDonald's nowadays? $7?

Almost every dish at the Papa Loca (also on the "Mexican" side of town) is 50 pesos and you will *not* go away hungry. It's not Applebee's, but why would you want an Applebee's? You can get out for less by ordering tacos -- five are 20 pesos. They're not very big tacos.

A hamburguesa from the man across from the zocalo is 35 pesos, and it's huge.

A very nice and filling breakfast at La Bocana (a nice place on the road near La Ropa), plus coffee, is about 60-90 pesos per person, with the high end being a feast with a piece of steak. Yum. When I go to breakfast at Friendly's in Boston, an omelet and a cup of coffee runs me $9.50 plus tip.

I'd be surprised if you and your teenagers wouldn't love these places. You'll have to be the judge of what your wife would think :).

As others have noted, dinner for four at a "nicer" (read: catering to gringos) sit down place will probably set you back $60 or so with a couple of drinks per person. Maybe a bit more at La Perla or other beach joints.

We splurged one night for the tasting menu at Espuma and added some margaritas and a bottle of French wine. This was close to $100 per person. I personally wouldn't go back, simply because the cheaper places have such tasty food.

In general, I think the best value is to be had at El Pueblito, La Papa Loca, Carmelita's, and Dona Licha, all of which are located on or near Heroico Colegio Militar, a few blocks behind the market.

Not sure there is a generic price guide to restaurants but here goes my attempt. There are restaurants for all budgets, and regardless of where you eat the food is almost always good, often very good and occasionally outstanding. The price differences are primarily due to location, service, decor/ambiance and view.

Appetizer/salad, fresh fish/chicken and dessert will run 200-250 pesos/person at most 'everyday' restaurants in town, think Fisherman's Walk area for example. Lobster and steak is more expensive. A nicer restauarant with a view- Il Mare for example- may be 100 pesos more. The 'Best in Class' Amuleto is 450 pesos for 3 courses, 550 pesos for 4 and 650 pesos for 5. Espuma and Tentaciones are in the same class. Beer in a restaurant is usually 20-25 pesos, standard maragitas around 50 pesos. Wine varies greatly but you can generally find a decent Mexican or Chilean wine for 250-300 pesos/bottle. American and French wines are more expensive.

As I have mentioned previously, I tend to get my 'Mexican' food fix- tacos, enchiladas, rellenos, etc.- at lunch and savor the fresh fish and meats at dinner. Also, over the years I have gravitated towards the hills for dinner; I enjoy the views and relative quiet and think the slight premium in price is well worth it. One thing is for sure, you will eat well on your trip. Enjoy!

One thing is for sure, you will eat well on your trip. Enjoy!

That's definitely what I want to hear. Everyone's been really helpful - good information.

One question - almost everyone who's talked about the upscale places has said that they're "continental" or "cater to gringos" or something like that. I understand what you mean - if I'm going to a place that's as well-known for good indigenous food as this area is, I don't want to sit down and order something I could get at any one of a dozen places in Minnesota, especially if I have to pay a lot extra for it - are there any _really_ good upscale "local" places? Maybe someplace with a chef who really uses the local ingredients in interesting ways - but still keeps that Mexican grandma recipe in the back of his head?

Oh - and I _love_ moles - where's the best mole place in the area?

Thanks,
Greg.

Would like to add all the fondas at the Mercado and enramadas at Barra as well. Don't get much homier than that, plus the price is right! It's probably just me (since I'm not a big mole fan) but just haven't seen a lot of it on the menues. Almost forgot, can I throw in Tamales Any as well as having authentic stuff? They probably even have a few dishes with mole!

Oh - and I _love_ moles - where's the best mole place in the area?

The Central Market. Southern Mexico's central markets for comida is the best in all of Mexico and Z is right up there among the top. I've found the further north you go the more it declines. By the time you make it up to Maz it's garbage. If you get outside PV or Maz 10 or more miles it does improve.

So for wonderful mole I recommend the market.

"...almost everyone who's talked about the upscale places has said that they're "continental" or "cater to gringos" or something like that..."

'Almost everyone' who says that hasn't been to these places, or hasn't been recently. The clientele for the upscale restaurants are well-off tourists, both 'gringos' and nationals. Remember, there are plenty of wealthy Mexican tourists who come to Zihuatanejo. We dined at Espuma Christmas week and we were the only English speaking group there. The same at Tentaciones our previous trip. A general rule of thumb is the later you eat, the fewer 'gringos'.

As for the food at the 'upscale places', they all use local ingredients but the sauces and pairings are more complex and inventive than you will find at other restaurants. Trust me, the meals you have at Amuleto, Espuma, Tentaciones and the other 'upscale places' are meals you will not get in the states. And don't get me started on the setting...

Try Rover's in Seattle, Cinghaile in Baltimore. The French Laundry in San Francisco, etc., etc. Surely more pricey than the similar restaurants in Zihuatnejo, but hard to top them anywhere that I've found so far.
