Mexican Drinking Water

Why can't Americans drink Mexican tap water? Are the purification standards that different? If an American moves to Mexico will their immune systems adjust? Just curious...(my wife says I have way too much time on my hands)...Thanks for any comments.

You probably do and isn't that grand. Most Mexicans that I know do not drink tap water either.

Anyone of any nationality can drink Mexican tap water. My husband and I have been doing it for years. We do ,of course, test our water monthly and have found the occasional bacteriological problem which we correct with an in-line purification system. The major problem here is the Total Dissolved Sediment content of the delivered water, both city and Pipa which averages 380 PPM. That along with the occasional dead rat in the Tinaca tends to make us a little more cautious than we might be in the Norte. .

........and never had an issue. Our water test kit gave it a "GO" rating. When we moved and bought another place we started renting the old place out. It was then that we realized the gringo factor required R/O water as the standard for rental units. After a while the taste factor drove us to R/O water...way better on the taste scale. But we still never worry about the quality of Zihua water but test it monthly and it always passes. After 25 years in Mexico we still laugh at the concern to wash vegetables in that 'drop' stuff. The very best advice we have ever had was 25 years ago when a nurse said "just carry a small tube of rubbing alcohol to rub on your hands after the bus-the stair case-the bano-the whatever". No need for the expensive "hand sanitizers".

I do use tap water to brush my teeth but I do not think the taste is good so I also drink bottled water. Santorini could not do without me. I, like you, never use anything except tap water to wash my vegetables and fruits. we all have our comfort level. And I was serious about not knowing Mexican people that drink tap water. These Santorini trucks run everywhere.

Tap water is fine to drink as long as you either boil it first or have some kind of reliable water purification or filtration system. The "responsible authorities" claim the potable water is safe to drink, and you can sure smell the chlorine in it, but most folks who can afford it in Mexico drink bottled water, usually buying garrafóns of water instead of the disposable plastic bottles.

Correct me if I'm wrong Tocayo> but think it has more to do with building codes (or lack of) not a good idea to bury the water line with the sewer line. Specially when there are leaks in both lines?

Well, tap water in many Mexican cities may be just fine. On the other hand, Mexicans don't drink tap water - the bottled water delivery trucks are every place you look
. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
Well, my family and I prefer to drink the water from the garrafon and at $14 pesos is worth it 9 cooking). We see the amount of Chlorine used of tap water and it seem hardly worth it to gamble with our health. As it is, we have to take pills every 6 months for parasites and other nasty water related pathogens.
to each it's own... Santorini is worth the extra 5 pesos to have drinking water and it taste decent.
we only used tap water to shower and brush our tooth!!
