One of the things that is pretty much the same all over Mexico is the sight, sound and smell of the camote vendor. I always feel at home when I hear the "whistle" of his rolling stove, smell its smoke and hear the familiar shout ¡kah-MO-tay! If you haven't tried them you are missing out on a nice treat.

New to me. Camote is a sweet potato or yam, I think. So how are they served as "street food" there? Fried, baked, mashed, candied? Do they spear it with a stick and hand it over like a paleta? How is it seasoned?

If you've never had them, you'd not know. BTW, in the original post it was called "a rolling stove" ... but aren't they sorta steam/baked as opposed to a regular bake?
But yeah, I love 'em myself and a very typical sight & sound of Mexico!
The camote guy and the whistle, the agua guy selling the garrafons, the gas guy, the rolling taco carts, the hamburger grill guy, the churro carts ... wherever you are you know it is Mexico!

Los camotes están horneados a la leña y al vapor, ya que se agrega un poco de agua, and we call his carrito un horno or una estufa. Perhaps one is more correct than the other for pricky I mean picky semanticists.

Thank you Rob, I enjoyed that a ton. The video was particularly illustrative. So it's a simple baked and steamed yam, and in this video plantain bananas as well, baked in a metal drawer & drizzled with condensed milk. I'd add a little canela (cinnamnon) and maybe a dash of vanilla (which is plentiful there too) but that's the deal. Love the steam whistle. This invention has got to be 100 years old if it's a day. Quite the nutritious treat and all for 20 pesos too. I cannot recall seeing or hearing one of those carts rolling around Centro, butwill definitely be on the lookout for them. Maybe it's seasonal and the yams aren't ready in January-March when most of us are generally there...

I notice that folks can sign-up for the surfing tournament at "Loma Bonita Bar" on Playa La Madera. Has El Presidente's brother opened a new bar, or is it just the informal one that has existed at Casa Loma Bonita for the last couple of years. I know Ivan is a dedicated surfer.
So is he putting a sweetened condensed milk on top? My husband would love it this way, me not so much. I would take mine with a little salt only please!

That's the way they are traditionally eaten all over México. Never heard of anyone putting salt on them. Salt kills.
Another Mexican sound.....

Agree... extraño ese sabor con un vaso de leche!!!
¿Son empanadas llenadas de camote?
Have been coming to Zihuatanejo for several years now, how have I missed this? I will be on the look out for camote in January.

Only Camote or does he have Chayote as well? I love a baked Chayote with cream and cheese!
