Trip report #2
Got up this last Saturday, (our second Saturday) took our morning walked on the beach down to the marina and back and eased into the day as we prepare for 4 friends who will be joining us during our second week here. Gonna be a few margaritas tipped tonight at Inferno E La Gloria. Sunday will be a day of Rest.
Sunday evening down to the basketball court for my tamale fix and then over to Lety’s (again). Just can’t get enough of that ladies cooking and hospitality. Coconut shrimp and shrimp stuffed mahi mahi shared by my wife and I while others did the same, except one who had the shrimp stuffed chile relleno. Had a taste and may have to give that a shot next time. Monday, back to Ixtapa Island (coral beach) and Princess Rebecca restaurant where Ishmael prepared the 6 of us a huge platter of grilled shrimp and red snapper, one of only several repeat meals we do every year.
Tuesday we spent an afternoon at La Escallera (our private infinity pool) which is open to the public. It sits up on the hill just to the right of and below Amuleto overlooking Zihua bay. We had a wait staff of only 5 while there were 6 of us. Somebody had to share. For dinner, we tried a new spot in Ixtapa called La Barra. It’s about 3-4 blocks behind the commercial area straight back from Scruples. Mixed reviews. Wednesday was a day of R&R which means we hung out at the Dorado pool, were our friends were staying.
Thursday morning we hopped on the bus and head for Barra de Potosi. Made it a point to get there early enough for breakfast and grabbed a couple of hammocks at Nayito’s. Watched with amazement as several fishermen surrounded a “fish boil” in the water with their boat dropping a net in less than 10 seconds. They then spent the next half hour manually pulling in a boat full of 25-30 inch Jack Cravell. Not sure but I’m guessing a weeks pay in about an hours work. We walked the beach and took a tour of gracious couple’s home. Dick and his wife from Washington state living the good life in Barra. Dinner was one last fix of Pozole back in town.
On Friday we walked the beach in Ixtapa, breakfast at Debra’s and then one last massage from Lulu. Built like a little bulldog and not recommended for wimps. She can be found in front of the Barceló and I have been going to her for 10 years. Got hands like sandpaper so you get an exfoliation at the same time. Stopped at Inferno e La Gloria in the evening for one last (Dos for Uno) margarita and then over to Frank’s for a pizza. An Italian from Canada who still doesn’t offer Italian sausage on his pizzas. Go figure! We strolled around the commercial area saying goodbye to the many business people we have gotten to know there through the years. Saturday morning we took another beach walk down to the Ixtapa marina and back, said our goodbyes to staff and friends at the Pacifica and than packed for our Continental “excursion” home. Wouldn’t it be great if you could get “beamed” there and back. Room is booked for next year so now it’s just airline reservations, grrrrrr!
New restaurant! Unanimous reviews, “El Tiburon de la Costa” in San Jose Ixtapa. It’s an 8 peso, 10 minute bus ride from Ixtapa specializing in mariscos. The bus drops you off right in front of the place and the bus stop for return is just across the street. This place is full of locals, spotlessly clean and prices a very reasonable. Go early as it closes around 6:30 or when the last customers leave.
