Zihua Shot-a-Day: Head Washes Up on La Ropa

The ghost of a young tuna haunts a few feet of Playa La Ropa sand; the camera lens ventures closer than human hands or feet dare.
What was the last thing the creature set lucid eyes on? The glint of a fisherman's knife? Or worse, the dull blade of suffocation?
There's beauty here, even in death. Air tarnishes life's quicksilver gleam to dull gray; but this head, returned to the sea, has steeped to translucent shades of pink and almost lavender.
And that one wide, worried eye still pleads—as if I could spare it those final, terrible sights. Could it be that cold stare that's kept these remains from hungry mouths and beaks, in a realm where nothing is supposed to go to waste?

I don't know about this one, Jeff. I think you may need some artificial stimulation.
Have you ever seen a copper sea?

It's not I who needs the artificial stimulation; it's my readers! Let me know when you've done your part and I'll re-submit...
Thanks for the copper sea pic -- ¡Que padre!

I mean, when you're on vacation and start posting pictures of nasty old dead fish heads on the beach, I think maybe you've been away from your normal reality too long and your feet might not be quite touching the ground. Time for a reality check?

One of my all-time favorites:
![[image]](http://ameliaislandliving.com/fernandinabeach/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/fernandinashrimpboatsunset1121.jpg)
"There was beginning to be such a subtle additive of light that I could make out the ghostly shape of a marker off to my left, where North Pass entered Timber Bay, and beyond it some shadowy tree shapes on the outcroppings that sheltered the bay. The Gulf was quiet, with a gentle lap and slap of small waves on the packed wet sand. I heard a deep-throated diesel chugging through the wet noises of the sea and soon saw the outline of a shrimper heading out. There was a pale yellow rectangle in the amidships area, with a man standing against the glow, and I saw him lift his arm and realized that he was lifting a cup of coffee to his lips. It was so vivid I could smell the coffee.
"And I had a sudden wrenching urge to shed my own identity and be somebody else. Somehow I had managed to lock myself into this unlikely and unsatisfying self, this Travis McGee, shabby knight errant, fighting for small, lost, unimportant causes, deluding himself with the belief that he is in some sense freer than your average fellow, and that it is a very good thing to have escaped the customary trap of regular hours, regular pay, home and kiddies, Christmas bonus, backyard bar-B-cue, hospitalization, and family burial plot.
"All we have, I thought, is a trap of a slightly different size and shape. Just as the idea of an ancient hippie is gross and ludicrous, so is the idea of an elderly beach bum. I dreaded the shape of the gray years ahead and wished to hop out of myself, maybe into the skin of the coffee drinker now far out of sight in the just-brightening morning. And he, the poor deluded bastard, would probably have changed places willingly."

We've read them all at least onec, but time to read them again I think. I'd almost forgotten Travis, the "Busted Flush" and "Miss Agnes"!
I wonder if they're available in Spanish for my Sony Reader?!

Please don't even suggest such a sacrilege as translating the eloquent snippets of wisdom of John D. MacDonald into Spanish.

Long ago a picture must have been an event. Capturing a living image has become too ordinary a miracle, perhaps. They go about with their automatic-drive Nikons and OM-2’s and their Leicaflexes, and put their finger on the button, and the hand-held machinery makes a noise like a big toy cricket. Reep, reep, reep, reep. A billion billion slides, projected once, labeled, and filed forever. Windrows of empty yellow boxes blow across the Gobi, the Peruvian highlands, the temple steps at Chichicastenango. The clicking and whirring and clacking is the background sound at the Acropolis, at the beach at Cannes, on the slopes at Villefranche. All the bright people, stopped in the midst of life, looking with forced smile into the lenses, then to be filed away, their colors fading as the years pass, caught there in slide trays, stack loads, view cubes, until one day the camera person dies and the grandchild says, “Mom, I don’t know any of these people. Or where these were taken even. There are jillions of them here in this big box and more in the closet. What will I do with them anyway?”
“Throw them out, dear.”
John D. MacDonald
WOW! That's heavy, man!
