Sunday in Zihua

Well, today started late but it has been a busy one and I feel I will sleep really well tonight. After my usual mexican comfort food breakfast at Margaritas, I came back to my hotel and was just relaxing waiting for a heads up bt friends as we were supposed to head out together to Playa Larga. Ended up getting a call letting me know it was just going to be me and a friend and we had to make our own way there. Even more fun!

We went down from La Madera to Plaza Kyoto and hoped into a collectivo and off we went toward the airport and about 10-15 minutes ater we went off and there was a pick-up truck with passenger seating in the back waiting there for us. We waited about 5 minutes and off we went. Another 10 minutes more or less and we arrived in PL. It's a nice stretch of beack with the sand like at la Madera but it goes on for a few kilometers. On the other side of that stretch is Barra de Potosi. In Barra you have a laguna where you can do tours and swim in. In Playa Larga, there is a river at the end but at this time of the year it doesn't go all the way to the ocean and not sure if people swim there. There is one hotel right on the beach and a few houses and several small restaurants right on the beach.

We settled on the last one going toward the end of the beach and enjoyed some tasty tiritas and some sopes and a cold beer in this open air restaurant with a palapa over our table on the beach. Great view and nice menu with very low prices. Each of these restaurants has pools for their guests and hammocks under their palapas. Awesome set up to relax in a beautiful setting. The beach is very nice, fairly clean but the ocean is pretty rough there and I would not recommend this area for swimming as there is a strong undertow and the waves were huge today, crashing hard. Maybe for very experienced swimmers and surfers but still fun to just walk the beach like we did and we did go in the water but up to our waist only.

Some horses and atvs are also available for rental and the last collectivo pick-up leaving for the junction to connect with the one going into town leaves PL at 19:30. It cost a total of 15 pesos between the 2 collectivos or you can take a cab back to Zihua for about 70-80 pesos but we had way more fun using the collectivos. We left at 19:00 and I went back to the hotel and showered and changed and got ready to head out to la Cancha as tonight is my favorite night in Zihua.

Fun times as usual were had there tonight. When I arrived a break dancing competition was going on and later on some classic Mexican folk dances were shown, representing each part of Guerrero. It was nice entertainment made even better with all the food carts on la cancha serving traditional food. I had a drink of pepino, a refreshing drink made of cucomber and lemon and settled on a quesadilla filled with chcicken, mixed veggies, potato, string cheese with some cream poured over after it's finished cooking and some queso blanco to top it. Yes, it's deep fried but after walking about 5 Kms today, I can indulge So yummy and I washed it down with a glass of horchata. Then a bit of walking around watching the scene and it was time to head back to my hotel. Another awesome day in Zihua! And as I'm typing this, finally a nice evening breeze which has been missing since I arrived here. The sky over the hillside tonight was actually looking pretty nasty as if we were about to get a storm and the waves are crashing good tonight. It sure feels nice!
