Even with most of the pier closed and all the negative vibes regarding the kill tournament, 150 contestants set out this morning for the first of three days of fishing in the competition for a million and a half pesos in prizes including 4 new vehicles, though a lot of us suspect the winning fish has already been caught. 
Here was the scene at the pier this morning just after the boats set off. No names of boats or contestants were posted on the tally board yet.

Apparently the weigh in was at around 4 pm. I went out into the crowd for a look see. Too bad I didn't have a camera. There were a number of decent-looking sailfish, and at least one particularly large marlin in a heap under a tarpaulin off to one side side, which is where they put them after they've been weighed and gutted. I suppose I'll swing by again tomorrow. I haven't checked yet but I'm sure there will be youtube videos if someone wants to do a search of Zihuatanejo pez vela tourneo 2014
Not as bad as we thought
Never as good as we hoped:
34 Sailfish over 30 kilos weighed
1 Marlin @ 320 pounds
Still not great, additionally we don't know what went in the ice chests, bit about the ones in the ice chests - they will be eaten by someone, they aren't feeding the cats at the dump.
Many Capitans caught several sails, 3 I know caught 3 fish, releasing 2 each, weighing the larger. The next 2 days will be different, If it won't beat what's on the board it will be released by these Capitans.

The leader so far is Floriberto Santane, flollowed by my friend Jaime Martinez and other friends Sergio Legorreta with old friend Barry Thomson from New Zealand. I don't recall the weights of their fish.
The tally board was mostly devoid of fish, and though I'm sure longlining has surely had significant negative effect, I'm hoping some of it is also from folks releasing smaller fish instead of killing them and selling them.
Daniel Fermin is making a gigantic sand sculpture of Poseidon in front of the Apostadero Naval. I imagine he'll be working on it until Sunday because it is a 2-meter high hill of sand.
