I see in this article of today's El Sur (http://suracapulco.mx/archivos/189476) that the dredging of the lagoon has now been approved, authorities having received the required MIA (Environmental Impact Permit). Dredging should start in the next week. Just needs the approval of the judge that granted ROGAZ the original restraining order. About time.

Has the work on the sewer plant been completed, Jack? Seems like that would be a good idea before they start dredging.

No idea but I hope that by the time they finish dredging it will have been finished. Someone else may have the answer.

The work on the sewage treatment plant isn't expected to be completed before next March. And even then, unless they are also planning on rebuilding the other main sewage treatment plant by the Unidad Deportiva then the "new" plant at La Marina will already be obsolete before it even starts working. Currently the plant by the Unidad Deportiva is completely inoperable and is simply pumping its crap to the plant at La Marina, which is also currently inoperable and is simply pumping the crap from both plants (actually 2 plants at each location) into the lagoon.
From the git-go the government has not been telling the complete story to the public, misleading folks into thinking that ROGAZ are the bad guys here, and since the local newspapers are paid off by the government they don't tell the whole story either but instead kiss the ass that feeds.
So if they get the green light the big question will be if they will start right away or wait until tourist season ends in 2 weeks. And once they start will they stop at 23 thousand cubic meters or go ahead with the full 83 thousand cubic meters? If they remove any more and have even the slightest mishap that damages anything, then someone will be risking a 15-year prison sentence, although here in the Paradise of Impunity that might not mean much.

If any dredging was approved by any judge or federal institution for anything more than two boat channels removing more than a total amount of 23 thousand cubic meters then the dredging will be in violation of the law. The MIA used for this project was not the right one. It was submitted over 2 years ago for a different project for 2 boat channels. The project the government wants to carry out is dredging of the entire lagoon and comprises 83 thousand cubic meters.
So excuse me if I don't celebrate with you the triumph of corruption and influentialism over legality and professionalism.

Can somebody tell me what the impact of dredging the lagoon, the inoperable sewage plants and the rebuilding/replacing of the pier will mean to occasional tourist (like me)? I am considering on returning next March for a couple of weeks. Thanks in advance.

It means the politicians and a few other "public servants" will be richer during your next visit.
Other than that everything else should be more or less just as it was when you last visited.

From a purely selfish point of view, I worry more about whether or not the area in Centro east (?) of Cinco de Mayo and south of Morelos will be liveable during the dredging - and whether the smells emanating from the Las Salinas area will be less than, equal to, or worse than they were last tourist season.

No doubt about it. The dredging will cause that part of town to have a wonderful new smell, and yes, it will also certainly make the beaches less welcoming, but they are only authorized to dredge two small boat channels, not the entire lagoon as the politicians had boasted and tooted their horns so loudly about (I wonder how long it will take for their sycophants to realize they've been lied to and used?). So though they may ruin what's left of our summer vacation season in Zihuatanejo, which is already piss poor in Zihuatanejo although Ixtapa is booming with the All-Included hotel crowd, by this fall and certainly before the winter season the damage should have passed, unless they break the law and dredge the entire lagoon. Since the only thing the involved politicians are interested in is skimming from the millions of pesos budgeted for this project, I doubt they'll risk their livelihoods now that they've already had their hands slapped. But you never can tell in the pre-election campaign period. Folks seeking to suck off the public cash cow have been known to get greedy and wreckless.
