Where to stay in Z for ten days?

Hello Experts!

We are planning on a trip to Zihua, late February, early March for ten days. We haven't been in years, we really enjoyed Playa Madera and La Ropa, stayed at Hotel Irma in Zihuatanejo and the Las Brisas in Ixtapa. Looking for recommendations; Catalina, Villa Mexicana or possibly a private rental.? Budget, no more than $300.00 per night. Where would you stay and why?

Catalina, well within your budget, great staff, best beach set up around, sunset bar, great breakfast spacious rooms, and the stairs help to burn off a few calories. Admittedly some of the rooms could use some updates. The Linda Vista suites are very nice, but we prefer to stay in the middle. We have stayed at Villa Mexicana, and lots of folks here rave about it. While it is less expensive the rooms are more basic. At Catalina, there is plenty of room to sit in the room a mini fridge and they will supply a coffe maker on request. Can't beat sitting on the deck and having coffee in the AM.

FWIW, we stay in room 41. 20 steps up to breakfast, 120 or so down to the beach, 8 down to the bar, and around 120 up to the top, so never too many at one time and plenty of shade to take a break and admire the view. We never have to walk them all at once. (the Linda Vista suites are very nice, but they are at the very top, so that's a bit of a negative. The couches are outside in the LV suites and we prefer to be inside at night.) The beach set up at VM is a bit more crowded. The rooms are more basic. When we last stayed there the only place to sit other than the bed was the proverbial plastic chairs, and in comparison with Catalina, the rooms are a fair amount smaller, although the bathrooms are bigger. It's sort of like comparing a Hilton with a Red Roof Inn. VM definitely provides value for $, but is a bit too basic. We enjoy the sitting area in our room to read and watch movies at night and since there is no comfortable sitting area at VM, we chose Catalina. That said, the VM is a fine property that lots of folks really love.

I also vote for the Catalina. Beautiful place, wonderful staff, and a great Mexican experience. We stayed there many times.

Late February/early March is one of our regular times at Catalina. The week of Presidents' Day is generally a full week for Catalina. We find the period after Presidents's Day is much more relaxed.

I also line up behind Catalina with the disclaimer that we have been staying there since 1987 and have never had any reason to consider any other place. For us, it's pretty perfect. We have put on a few years since 1987. We have a few aches and pains we didn't have 25 years ago, but we don't find the stairs an issue.

If you have mobility issues more involved than a few aches and pains the stairs can certainly be an issue. But as Timmac well described, the stairs meander (not straight up like that killer stairway at Sotavento used to be) and there are views to admire on your way. And a strategically chosen room can mean less routine stair climbing.

Other than budget you don't give a lot of info to go on - likes and dislikes, preferred activities -but my suggestion would be to split your time between two places; a cheaper place on the beach like the Catalina and a more expensive, more luxe place like Casa Que Canta, Amuleto, Quinta Troppo, or another smaller boutique hotel. You stay within your overall budget and you experience Zihua and La Ropa through both a classic old-time hotel and a modern upscale boutique hotel.

Just a thought.

I like your idea of splitting the stay between places. Casa Que Canta looks beautiful, however we have a nine year old. Not sure if they allow children?

For my money, there is no better place in Zihua than Hotel Aura del Mar (formerly Las Brisas del Mar) on Playa Madera Beautiful old classic hotel with great rooms, Great restaurant, pool, waterslide, great staff and FABULOUS VIEWS from your room. Also reasonable rates! Check out their website.
