Correos - Post Office Boxed
We will be starting our 6 month retirement adventure in September. This message board has been very helpful, and just wondering if the Correos rent P/O Boxes, or what does everyone do about forwarding mail? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your reply!

Mail? You mean like SNAIL MAIL? Haven't we all moved on to e-mail and the digital world and left all that behind us? 
Yes, amigo, the Oficina de Correos will rent out boxes if they have them available, and you should be able to get an APDO # (apartado postal) address if you are unable to receive mail at your street location.

We pay all bills on line and have someone here hold all our mail. I wouldn't count on getting much with the Mexican post office. And IF you do, it can take a month or more to get a letter.

The PO will not forward to an international address. Also there is limitations on the length of time you can forward.
Your bank statements, Credit Card bills, Insurance items and other sensitive personal information will not be forwarded by the P.O. and returned to sender. I found out this year and some was a pain to correct.
Better to do a "change of address" to someone you trust and go online with all of your personal info.

I do paperless billing and pay all my bills online.
What little has to come through snail mail, goes to a trusted friend in the States.

Because we travel for a month or more, we set up automatic payments from our checking account or 1 credit card depending on the bill- we do not use this card while traveling. With internet banking we are able to move funds between accounts. We use a bank debit card(not a Visa or MC) for our daily cash needs.
I do not know how long the PO will do a hold on the mail- at least the mail is held for over a month. This procedure has worked fine for us the last few years and have never missed a payment or any late fees.
We have not had a permanent residence for the past 15 years since we left the USA on our sailboat. We set up a private mailbox with Wanderer's Mail Service in Seattle who forward our mail to wherever we are every couple months or when we tell them to. They separate and toss all the 3rd class junk mail and only forward 1st class and specified magazines. We continue to use them since we purchased our "6-month" land home in Zihua a few years ago. We are always able to have our pack of mail (about the size of a moderate phone book) brought down by friends or visitors every couple months or so. Even if we ever move off the boat and on land in the USA I think we would continue to use a mail forwarding service just to avoid the junk mail.
Oh, and another advantage of using a Seattle forwarding service it has helped in establishing Washington State as our USA residence --- no state income tax!
