Does anyone know where I can buy a window air conditioner and about how much will I have to pay?

So I turn on my A/C this morning and nothing but warm air. Major bummer. Call Lucio. He stops by with his crew. In about 5 minutes he finds the problem: a fried capacitor (and a big one at that). In another 5 minutes he's got the capacitor replaced and gives me a little freon charge for good measure and I'm in Ice Station Zebra! Cost? 300 pesos!

Ya just can't beat service like that.

Things got a little hot today and I too decided to turn on the old AC to chill it down a bit. As I reached for the switch that spelled sweet relief I realized that I don't have AC as we can't afford to pay the outrageous electric bills that come with such an extravagant luxury...

That's why I work so damn hard: so I can afford it. It also keeps me from having to replace my computer or parts of it every couple of years due to the humidity and salt air.

I just about sh*t when I got my last electric bill. It was over $8,000 (Excuse me $6167) pesos and even though I am rich and famous, I can not afford that kind of bill. I had only run the air about 6 hours at night. The people here get ripped horribly from CFE.

For the brief time I had AC here, that is the type of bills I was receiving, or worse. My only solution was to move into the jungle with more shade trees.

I have yet to see photo-voltaic panels on any houses in Zihua. For a solar system to work at night, you'd also have to invest in a bank of batteries, if your local electricity provider doesn't buy your excess production during the daytime. We have solar on our new place here in Montana, and it's great to watch the meter run backwards. With R-80 walls and R-100 ceiling insulation we don't need A/C; a fan is sufficient on really hot days. I was on Cyprus in the early eighties and almost every house had panels on the roof.

the R factor is first and most important factor. At least R19 walls and R30 ceiling. Then you can use a small AC unit for the sleeping room-probably would run on a 2kw Honda (the only way to go in gnerators). But a wind generaotr, solar panels and battery bank would work albeit at a price.

OK, but where can you get solar or wind equipment down here? I've never seen any panels or windmills in Guerrero. I'd love to get out from under the CFE blackmail.

Is the big marina/boat supply shop still open in Ixtapa? Wind gens are used on boats.

Several years ago a guy named Johnny (gringo) on Playa Blanca installed solar panels, don't know where he got them. As I recalled they were stolen when he was away from home.

Kind of like saying I want to buy a car, how much do they cost. It depends on the unit, the size of room you need to cool, brand etc. In addition to where Rob mentioned, Elektra, Sam's, Comercial and many more carry units. Prices range from a couple thousand pesos up. Know your square meters you want to cool and go shopping. All the info is on the boxes, or if you use a professional, they will guide you.

And the smaller businesses usually bury the 16% IVA in the price. I would expect to pay 4-6,000 MN for a unit.

A Kill-o-Watt kWh meter is really useful to keep track of energy use. Plugs into a wall receptacle then the accessory plugs into the Kill-O-Watt meter. Helps to avert shock when the armored car shows up to collect on the bill. But sadly I have never seen one for sale in México.

When you have just one high month for Electric it will pull the
rate you per kilowatt up by four or five times what the low rate
is, then the higher rate will go down again to the lowest rate
over about a year period. It is an incredible rip off. Probably
someone somewhere are siphoning off the profits.
