Can anyone update me on taxi fares to Troncones or a "better" way to get there from the airport?

I recommend renting a car, especially if you are staying away from the town in or by Manzanillo Bay. It gives you mobility and flexibility to come and go at your leisure. You can explore the area, try out restaurants and beaches, without any transportation hassles.

At first I was nervous to drive in Mexico but now after renting 5 times, I prefer driving. I use a credit card with CDW coverage in Mexico and I bring their terms and conditions with me. Last week I made my reservation with Europcar for our January visit, and I verified that the personal liability insurance is included in their rate and that they will accept the credit card CDW insurance. They confirmed that in writing.

The road from the airport to Troncones is not busy and the drive is easy.

There is a speed bump on that road you should be aware of. I drove to Troncones a couple of years ago and hit it hard enough that my rear-view mirror dislodged from the windshield. It wasn't visible because it was in the shade of roadside tree.

That tope wasn't on the highway, it was on the road connecting to Troncones. If it's been removed, so much the better.

Said tope is still there. Slow down as you enter Troncones. It is shaded by a huge tree so well that it is hard to see. A can of yellow or white paint would sure be nice there.

A warning sign would be helpful, too.

If you rent a car...i might suggest purchasing 100% liability coverage, based on an experience a recent guest had...just my 2 cents worth.
If taking a cab, I'd say bite the bullet and just grab a cab out the front door of the airport.
There are many ways to come to Troncones, it's just a matter of how adventurous you are. You can take a combi to Zihua...a bus to the to the top of the hill above Troncones...and then a combi from there...to me it's all in the timing.

Hola Jenny.

IMHO, the best way to get to Troncones from the airport is to have the airport taxi drop you off somewhere in Zihuatanejo first, maybe a store where you can get a few things you'll need that aren't available in Troncones, and then take a regular public taxi from there. Another option is to walk off the airport property with your bags and go to Andy's Place, the liquor store right outside the airport gates, and either wave down a passing regular taxi or have the folks at Andy's phone one for you.

The rate to Troncones aren't fixed, but I've got the ballpark rate listed on my Local Taxis page.

Last November it cost us 500 pesos to get to Troncones and 400 pesos to get back to Zihua. The biggest problem is that taxis from Zihua/Ixtapa are strongly discouraged from taking fares back from Troncones, so they compensate by charging for a round trip. Plus, without a car in Troncones, it cost us 100 pesos round trip if we wanted to go somewhere for dinner that was too far to walk (Inn at Manzanillo Bay and Eden Hacienda were too far from our lodging to walk, especially in the dark). Although, based on previous experiences renting a car in Mexico, not sure that would have saved us anything.

That said, this is still cheaper than what it costs us to get to Treasure Beach Jamaica and back from either Montego Bay or Negril.

I believe circumstances have changed since last year. The rates shouldn't be as high as they were then.

The Europcar reservation I have is $57USD for a week, providing an automatic compact car with a/c and unlimited miles. I am using my credit card CDW coverage. This is a deal and it gives us independence to roam at will.

$57 a week? Wow, that is a real deal and one could even afford to UP the liability coverage (which is usually sold by the day even if you rent for a month).

I haven't seen it on this post but ALWAYS inspect the vehicle carefully and note any damage/scratches and even take a bunch of pics to show the condition.

We have used Eurocarar and like them

Rob, and all of you that posted your suggestions for me. Thank You. Here's what I did. I was traveling light, (one carry on) so I walked out of the airport and caught the waiting cambi on the north corner of the airport . It was 12 pesos to the Commercial or Sams club. Very nice ride. After shopping a little, I asked a couple of Taxis out front for the price to Troncones. I paid 350 pesos from there. Total cost, under $30. I felt very safe and saved 1/2 the cost of the Airport Taxis. Thanks again, Jen

As Lady M said, "well done."
Exactly the best way to go.
On the return trip, you can catch a Troncones cab…

If you want to know how not to do a Zihua-Troncones round trip,
send me a message via the envelope to the right of my username.

Make sure your credit card insurance will work for a rental in Mexico. A lot of times it's strictly for the U.S.A.
