The federal government's Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) has been running the show there since arriving on the scene about 4 years ago. Unfortunately the folks from the village of La Chole don't seem to be benefiting as much as they should. The paved road ends at the museum. Hardly anyone goes into the village, which is about another mile down the road. It seems even the tour guides are all from someplace else.

Oh that's a shame that people don't continue on into the village. We had a wonderful lunch there last season and met really nice people, who then insisted on showing us their little church. Worth the extra time to visit there.

A few years ago I had our driver take us on into the village. We still had our guide from the museum with us. We stopped at the little store there and bought some snacks and beverages. Not much, I know, but wanted to do what we could. The guide commented on the nice gesture. Maybe others will read this and have their drivers take them on to the village. There's still the artifact at the church to see.

We were looking at the display of pre-Columbian things at the store, when I asked if any items were for sale. "Absolutely not" I was told as it was illegal to sell artifacts. Within minutes a young man nudged me and showed me a few small ceramic items he was trying to sell. If anyone's contemplating buying anything along those lines, be aware that taking them out of the country is illegal and they'll be confiscated if caught at baggage check on the way out.
