Our Virgin Mobile phone service does not work in Mexico. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, particularly with a pay as you go plan. Thanks in advance for your assistance.
Cell Phone Service
Go to one of the many phone kiosks in Zhia and buy a phone. Somewhere around $30-50.00 US. Then go to Istapa Telcel office with your phone and establish an account with the Amigo plan. Buy additional minutes at the many XOXO stores as you need them. I have a phone that I purchased in 08 and re establish my account when I come back to Zhia. A new SIM card, 200 minutes to start, and the Amigo plan for under $50.00 and this will last almost 3 months for the few calls I make locally and to the US at a VERY low rate per minute. No need to go to Ixtapa!
There are Telcel offices all over Zihuatanejo. One on Vicente Guerrero a half block from the waterfront, one on Nicolas Bravo between Benito Juarez and Vicente Guerrero. I just did this with several people. Just go in and say Plan Amigo, pick out your phone (bare bones is around 300 pesos and includes 100 pesos of minutes) With the Amigo plan you have 3 people you can call for free. If you know them in advance have them on a paper and they will put them in. If not, go online to Mi Telcel and set up an account and you can add your three numbers, or change them and find out when your minutes are about to expire and recharge your phone.
No need to go to Ixtapa!
That's good news because previously these places COULD NOT or WOULD NOT set up an Amigo plan for a phone you already had. You could buy the phone there but had to go to Istapa to set up the Amigo plan. This will save me a trip to Istapa and that's good because I have no desire to go to Istapa for that or anything else. Zhia is just fine for me!
