Be interesting to see how Canadians make out. I don't believe Canada has this rule. I was once accused of lying when I tried to explain to the woman at the TIP counter that British Columbia was part of Canada, not part of the United States and we did not use vehicle Titles or "Pink Slips in Canada.
A friend imported his vehicle from Canada last April and even with a broker he didn't clear Km 21 (Nogales) until 3:00 PM, having arrived at 8:30 AM.
He also had to part with a $100.00 US note to avoid having to unload all his personal items in order for the officials to check the VEHICLE!

It was because of all the changes and potential hassles that we decided to take our car back to Canada and buy one here in Mexico. We are happy with our decision and have no worries now about any new regulations. We took the easy route!

What a "fear sells" article!
Mexican drivers tend to suffer more injuries not because their cars don't meet U.S. safety standards but because (a) you do not need to know how to drive to obtain a drivers license, (b) most people do NOT use seatbealts, (c) most drivers pay no attention to speed limits but simply see them as a suggestion, (d) drinking and driving is not even close to being taken seriously in Mexico (you can talk to a traffic cop with a beer in your hand and he'll most likely ask you if you have another one for him), (e) most roads are poorly maintained if at all, (f) cattle are often allowed to wander on highways, (g) turn signals are used for numerous things except to signal a turn, and (h) those topes seem to just pop up out of nowhere and send you flying off the road or break your suspension.
Defensive driving is mostly an unknown concept in Mexico, which is all the more reason to practice it diligently.
I love my Mexican built car!

I have been driving a Mexican made car for 7 years and have had no problems other than normal wear and tear. Love my Captiva.

Love my Mexican Nissan Xtrail. Have one in Canada too, and don't see any difference between them.
