Too many people seem to be missing the point. Things to keep in mind please:
1. there is no problem for tourists taking a taxi
2. the problem is for those of us here who have our own vehicles. When we take friends in our cars, especially if a Mexican takes foreign friends in his/her car, the taxi drivers feel those passengers should be taking taxis and protest to the driver of said car
3. this has gone on here of years and evidently goes on in many other places in our world, including the US and some places in Europe. There is no violence. They are just protesting- yes, in a way that really does not help them nor anyone else
4. this has happened frequently in the past several years and most of you never knew anything about it. Heck, I had never heard of taxi problems in Zihua before 3 weeks ago. I had heard about airport taxi issues, but not this stuff.
5. the airport taxis are NOT the ones protesting. Yes I have heard that there have been problems in the past with airport taxis, but I personally have never experienced a problem in that area, so cannot comment. However, there is no present issue with the taxis at the airports.

This morning II met with Francisco Rivera, director of tourism here in Zihua, at the request of our mayor, Eric Fernandes. Of course they are not impressed with the taxi drivers, and are embarrassed because of their actions, but in order to take action they need documentation, so are advising us to take photos if there is ever another problem, and give them to tourism so they can take some action. Also, Francisco says if anyone is blocked, to call the police and they will break it up. Again, this does not really concern the tourists. This is information directed more at those of us who have vehicles here.

I really hope this information helps people to stop fretting and panicking about something that is just not an issue for tourists. Please folks- just come to Zihua and enjoy your vacation.

Thanks, Linda. Hopefully the taxi drivers will get word of this and decide to not continue being butts.

aha....just emailed you. Francisco told me that he would have better luck trying to get the ceiling to think, than to get the drivers to think about how their bad actions could affect everyone in a negative way...and still not get them what they want! I thought that was a really funny (but sad in a serious way) analogy.

The Taxi Union ruined Will's business of taking customers on different tours and bird watching. The first time we went he was able to pick us up at our hotel and drop us off and the 2nd time we had to meet him on the street by a store. Short time after the 2nd tour we took with him he had to stop because of the problems with the taxi union. We loved touring with Will because he loved the area and he wanted us to see it like he does. Kathie will never forget when we went to the waterfalls to swim and have lunch with the kids joining us after they got out of school that morning in the pool- she had never swam in a pool fed by a waterfall.

Guess I haven't been paying attention to recent events, so I don't know the particulars. But my question is this, heading down in two weeks and I normally walk outside the airport gates to catch a taxi rather than pay the fee inside the gates. Have there been any new problems with this?

Nothing new there that I have heard of...and I have been listening. Remember it's not the airport taxis that are protesting. It's the city taxis...and they aren't protesting against people who are TAKING taxis. Their beef is with those who DON'T take taxis. I don't expect you will have any issues.

In years past when I flew in I have walked down the street with my family and taken the city bus to the beach in Z…is that not a good idea anymore? Coming in December to stay at Hotel Catalina…with wife and 9 year old daughter..

Well that's exactly the same question the poster above mine was asking. Please see my reply above. I really can't add anything to what I said. I don't believe there is any issue for you. That's just my opinion. I don't believe anyone has posted here about having a problem with this.

here is some reality.
the cost of a taxi from airport to cerro del vigia 450 pesos. 33 us$
from tokyo international (Haneda) to my hotel 15 km, 4200 yen. 35.69 us$
and yet in Bangkok the fee from the airport to my hotel, 35 km is 435 baht includingToll highway. 13.45 us$

so of course the taxis at the airport aren't protesting, they are to busy counting their money.

I fear you don't appreciate the entire situation for the airport taxis. While local taxis charge less for the same ride, they can afford to because they not only take fares from point A to point B, but they also commonly take fares from point B to point A. The airport taxis not only typically provide better vehicles, but they normally only take fares from point A to point B but not the reverse. Even though technically they are supposed to be able to offer trips from lodgings to the airport, the local taxi unions have been fairly successful at getting away with illegally blocking the airport taxis, and that's where the original taxi blocking started. Since they've been allowed to get away with it, obviously they feel emboldened to take it to the next level and block other people whom they deem are "stealing their business". The lack of intervention by the federal government, who license the airport taxis, has allowed the local taxis, who are licensed by the state government, to get away with breaking the law because local and state governments pander to the large taxi unions for their votes.

there is no fear, or no understanding. all the taxis are now out of control. f**c it im the new uber. send a message ill give you a ride to the airport up to 4 people in a crv. 200 peso. yesterday it was 350 pesos to go to las palmas on playa larga. the same cab would not wait even though the return was the same price. they are idiots. im sorry but taxi drivers are not doctors or lawyers.
