I met this little fella on the road to Playa Madera this morning. He was missing one leg but was very cooperative for photos:

Keep you ears open for Chacalacas and see of you can get some pictures of them!

He still moved pretty quick but he didn't want to go far. i tried to get him to move off the road but at one point he just refused to go any further. I hope he made it to cover on his own.

I'll keep my ears open for Chacalacas. I've not seen one.

Chacalachas (sp) can be heard in the south end of La Ropa around the hills. They are very elusive and hard to spot. Sometimes at dusk you can see them in the bushes.

We've got a nesting pair of Chacalacas with a juvenile (hatched this summer) up here on the hill above Madera. They are regularly around in the mornings and the evenings.

A brown back Mexican Tarantula if I guess right as I am no entomologist. Will Hunter chime in. Harmless unless really provoked and it takes a lot to piss them off. People carry them in their hand to inspect without trouble. I said other people do- not me. Nice shot, I have one pic from the Yucatan of a red back about 4 times that large and we gave him a wide berth! Nasty looking fangs in those critters if they ever do use them.

Well, they cannot "shoot" the hairs at you; but, when aggravated they can rapidly rub their legs over their lower abdomen and the hairs slough off in a cloud. These hairs can irritate your eyes and mucous membranes causing discomfort. All this only when they are really aggravated. Not a particularly aggressive animal if left reasonably undisturbed.
