So sad at the loss of Mike. He was so much a part of Zihua-He would come in where ever Jimi was playing and walk up to the stage and say" Play me a Blues" I will Play one more Blues for you tonight my friend. You will be greatly missed! Jimi

Would this be the same Chicago Mike that was the bartender at Nye's Polonaise Room in Minneapolis, MN?

I only know he lived in Chicago and came to Zihua every winter. He was very helpful with Sail Fest and warn and friendly to everyone. I have been here 11 years and he was here every winter for as long as I can remember. When you saw Mike you knew high season had arrived.

Okay. I'm not so sure it's the same Mike then. I knew a "Chicago Mike" from Minneapolis, and I had met him years ago on Isla Mujeres on the Carribean side of Mexico. He and his buddy had me in stitches with their stories and jokes. He was quite a character, and I made a point of visiting him at Nye's once when I was in Minneapolis. He was a fixture at Nye's and I couldn't believe he was still bartending at his age! I knew he planned on retiring a few years ago, and wanted to split his time between Mexico and the midwest. Your post brought me some warm memories, I'm sorry for your loss. Jo

I have heard that. I have family up in the Cities, in the Nordeast, and they let me know. I plan on getting my fiance in Nye's before it closes, as he's Polish and will truly appreciate it!

So sorry to hear this. I always enjoyed chatting with him. Dumbest thing I ever said to Mike? "Where are you from Mike?" :-
I'll never forget his expression!

Now who's going to buy all those raffle tickets at Sailfest?

We hope someone can shinny up the pole at Rossy's and set Mike's City of Chicago flag at half-mast. He'd like that.

Mike was a true Zihua treasure. We spent many an evening reminiscing about our experiences of, and love for, Zihuatanejo. He will most certainly be missed.

Awww...He was a fun and very sociable guy. He did a lot of walking on the Z beaches and El Palmar. Seemed very healthy. Sorry to hear of this.

I spoke to another annual beach friend and he told me Chicago Mike passed away Christmas Eve at home in Zihua , in bed and maybe in his sleep .

He had shared a drink or two with a group of friends and hadn't mentioned feeling poorly .

We had met his daughters other Christmas seasons and they may have been coming down or may be feeling guilty if they were to skip this year but Mike made it clear how proud of them he was and since he truly loved Zihua, You could say he died at home after a night out with a group of friends .

I think he shared his summer time around up north lately but they could and should have called him Zihua Mike up there .

A guy with his own flag will be missed , full or half mast .

Please be happy always

What else can I say that hasn't already been sad. Mike was one of a kind. And a wonderful friend to Sailfest and therefore the kids who benefited from his generosity. I can think of now better way for Mike to pass...as gently as he inhabited this world. RIP
