Rented a car for family the first week of Feb 2014. Budget had an amazing price. There had just been a long thread about not buying the "optional" corporate insurance, and how not to do it, and be covered on your credit card.
We were NOT allowed to have the car unless we bought the insurance, period. That changed the rental week charge from about $50 US to almost $300. Then, if you want anyone to drive other than the one name on the rental agreement, it was another 50 bucks. Paid it, decided to take on corporate when they got home.
Corporate didn't care, and said their locations could require whatever they wanted.
Taxi's aren't expensive, DON'T rent a car!!!

thanks for your response, wanted to have a car to use to drive a bit up and down the coast and also pack an inflatable kayak. Probably will take your advice. John

vehicle rentals in zihua?

Over the years we would rent a car for a few days during our two week stays. Sorry have to look back at journal to see which rental in Ixtapa. We never had any issues, just use your defensive driving skills in town. A number of years back, while driving in Zihua a public bus ran into us, none of us were hurt. It was the crazy hassle of dealing with the after math that has turned us off from renting. Thank goodness a young man came forward as a witness and gave us his cell number. It was a fight to get the bus driver's name, but no matter we had the bus number. The car rental agency did try to help us with the claim. Without going into the long detail, we spent the entire day on a goose catch, first police headquarters then were told no we are meeting at a bus station, then followed a car to some sort 2nd bus terminal where our car was left to have auto body repairs... It was all done under the table, to keep the bus drivers record clean, wish they had told us right from the start. It was OK with the rental agency and the Jetta was back on the lot in two days. Not knowing the language was a big disadvantage, but I did understand the bus driver saying it was our fault when we met at the bus terminal. He was silent when I told him we had a witness.
