Back in the early 1990's when Marina Ixtapa was built, someone got greedy and decided to bulldoze the mangroves there to try to cover over the swamplands, wetlands and estuaries. One of the consequences was that the buried vegetation spontaneously combusted several years afterward causing crabs and other critters who lived underground there to literally cook in their holes. The underground fires smoldered for 2 or 3 years. Then, a little over 10 years ago some bright developer, whom I imagine was encouraged by Fonatur in Ixtapa to buy some "cheap" land, decided to build some condominiums on land that should never have been allowed to be developed. Just when they were putting the finishing touches on the units... OOOOPS... This is what happened.

Now a little over 10 years after this photo was taken the same land has once again had all its vegetation razed (never mind the violations of ecological laws) for what appears to be Round Two of Stupid Development. And this time they appear to be building a much larger project. Buyer beware! Take a look at this photo or just wander down to the marina to see all the cracked and sinking buildings to be reminded that unscrupulous people are still in charge of administrating Ixtapa, and that Fonatur is simply not trustworthy. For over 40 years they still haven't paid the local communal landowners for land the government expropriated, and as recently as last week one of their officials blatantly lied on a local morning radio talk show, saying the landowners had been compensated but that they simply must've forgotten. Absurd!

I almost feel sorry for the current developer who got sold this swampland. Almost.

You'd think that someone, (the developer? whoever gave the building permits?) would be responsible for removing the rubble, but that's obviously wishful thinking.
On the other hand, maybe it could be promoted as "The Leaning Tower of Ixtapa."
Reminds me of the wreckage of the Casa Grande hotel along the beach in Melaque, Jalisco - destroyed in a 1995 earthquake - that will sit as an eyesore for the next couple of centuries.

Oh, the buildings were torn down and the rubble is long gone, which is why I posted the heads up. Possibly the current developer has no idea what happened there previously.

I wonder who picked up the tab to remove the rubble? There are many abandoned buildings in Zihua that have been there for years...decades, even. I guess there's no way to force the property owners to clean up.
Back home the municipality has the right to come and cut your grass (and bill you for the cost) if you let it grow too long !
