Can anyone give me feedback on the tour of Xihuacan with Juan Carlos Garcia and the Romero brothers?

I didn't go with Carlos, but I had a great time visiting the site when I went during the off-season. The transportation service Etasa has excellent drivers with late-model vehicles who can get you there and back safely. The best guides are found at the site itself.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind, but I am wondering whether anyone's had experience with Adan Romero or his brother, who are from La Chole.

I've been there three times,once before it was developed we went up a path and went to the big cactus.Most recently went with Carlos and he was great,Adan seems to take a lot of pride as he explained in Spanish Carlos translated to the group of four.It was nice ,Adan is very humble but explains the history to get an understanding of what went on there during the times.We enjoyed our visit there.Definitely would give a thumbs up to Carlos and Adan.

I was told that the big cactus no longer exists. Heard it burnt down. Hopefully not true. Last time we visited the big cactus was 2008. Last visit to La Chole was 2013. It was on the 2013 visit that they told us the cactus was gone.

Yes, unfortunately it appears some despicable person poisoned the cactus, possibly by pouring kerosine or a similar substance around it causing it to wither and die.

That is brutal, humans can't seem to let things be! Does anyone know the approximate age the plant was?

I had heard it estimated to be around 600 years old, but I doubt anyone really knows.

Several years ago I visited Loreto Mex. on the Baja and it is inundated with cactus most no where near as large as this one was and a different type but the locals estimated some were in the area of 600 to 1000 years old.

Yes, Barb. I know Adán and José well. Good people. They are by far the best local guides if you can get them.

I went with Carlos before the site was officially opened, and Adan was our guide. He seemed to take great pride in being able to show us around. He even performed a ritual for us. He did not speak English, but was very patient with my Spanish, speaking slowly and letting me ask questions when I didn't understand. And Carlos also acted as translator.

I returned with Carlos last year to see the museum, and again Adan explained many of the artifacts. I can recommend both Carlos and Adan.

We took tour with Juan Carlos the last 2 years. The 1st one our main area we wanted to see was Refuge, ruins & Barra. We also went to a zihu school & some where up past La Ropa (I think) to see different views of the bay. We stopped in Pantalon to see the church. We have not been disappointed. Last year we met up with Shark boy for a tour, stopped where a family made coconut candy, tile maker. I don't know where we went but way down the highway from there and ate at a roadside restaurant.3 young ladies cooked us a very good lunch. Beautiful view & good prices. On the way back we stopped back at the ruins so we could see how much more had been done. He is always kind and wanting to know if we want to see anything else.

And how do I get hold of Juan Carlos please? We will be down Monday and haven't been on any tours there lately, Trying not to be so lazy this time.
