Playa Laud ?

Saw a billboard yesterday on the way to Ixtapa and Playa Quieta advertising (I think) lots for sale on Playa Laud.
We've never heard of Playa Laud. Where is it?

As for Playa Quieta, we enjoyed it. Big surf, but little of the strong undertow of Playas Palmar or Larga/Blanca. Watch for submerged (and dangerous) rocks at the north end of Playa Quieta.
The only jarring notes were the white-outfitted Club Med security guards, looking like admirals in the Iraqi Navy, intent on making sure that riffraff like us didn't stray onto "their" beach.
An irritant was an hour of awful, incredibly loud pounding music from Club Med's pool area....arranged, I guess, by those ubiquitous "recreation directors". Kinda made Playa Quieta sound more like Playa Laud, if you catch my drift. And we were set-up at least 300 meters away! The thought of paying Big Bucks to stay at a Club Med, only to be assaulted in that way boggles the mind. But it only drowned out the sound of the surf for an hour or less. It felt so wonderful when it stopped!
Oddly, almost every person on the beach, (including us, by the way, but we're on the Anglophone team), was a Quebecer. Even the recreation director was shouting in French. Maybe it was a convention?

The internet is your friend....south of Barra de Potosi.

Donde?

Apparently it is home to many Leatherback turtles. Wow....looks to be quite the development planned.

Urgh! So wish I had not gone to the site!

Urgh! So wish I had not gone to the site!

I dunno, Tess.

Let's see:

A Zozaya-designed villa, with pool, on a pristine beach, with nothing but the sound of the surf to lull you to sleep?

Or a fourth-floor walk-up on Calle Cauahtemoc, wafted by the breezes from Las Salinas and serenaded by La Carpa 'til 4 am?

Tough choice.

I suspect finances make that choice for us! But I would still hate the concept of the invasion of what should be ecologically protected even if I could afford it.

Looks like it is on Playa Valetin. You can really zoom in on this lagoon/beach area on Google earth. Haven't been there in years. Used to get there by going down to Petalan and dbouble back under the first bridge and drive a rough road to Valetin.

Hope someone jumps in here with the latest news.

My sentiments exactly. Not much hope for "Wild and Scenic Places" or "Wilderness Areas".

What's with Club Med? I thought the beaches in Mexico were public.

The beach is public....up until Club Med's rope barrier. It wasn't a problem, just an observation. But I can envisage Club Med managers salivating over the possibility of "privatizing" the entire beach, like some of those high-end places have done south of Playa Palmar. I've always wondered what would happen if I kayaked onto one of those "private" beaches.

You don't remember all the problems around 4 years ago and all the discussion here on the Message Board when they blazed a road through the mangroves and blocked the natural flow of water into and from Laguna de Potosí causing both droughts and flooding? I believe the first comment on the subject was this one:
destroying Mangroves near Barra - Rogelio, 2011-04-12, 14:20

Let me refresh your memory with just one of the more informative of the many discussions (including some with photos) from back then:
development 'Laud' is shut down by PROFEPA !! - Laura, 2011-06-08, 15:12

I hope no one will buy anything there. They shouldn't be rewarded for bad behavior.

Yes, I recall the discussion - just didn't associate it with "Playa Laud".

They were handing out information for there and selling little stuffed turtles down at the Saturday market last summer. At least that is where I thought it was.

It is quite improbable that a 40km stretch of beach will become protected. It is however probable, if it is planned with the ecology at the forefront, it will be much better than the haphazard unplanned development that goes on practically everywhere in Guerrero at the cost of the environment. Zihuatanejo is a fair example of shoddy planning. Troncones good, La Barra not so good, Ixtapa not too bad, casa geo development feo. the list goes on.

The new road now has a large bridge and several culverts making it far better than the old original ejidal access rd to the north of this, which has been there for countless years and has 1 small box culvert and 1 small culvert. the one that was never mentioned when new road went in and "blocked" the flow.

I'm sorry, but I am all for planned and environmentally sensitive, well planned/engineered, low density developments, with proper sewage disposal systems. with planned and cared for public access and permanent designated large interconnected green spaces and wildlife corridors with strict guidelines supported by all interests.

If they are not planned for during careful development with conscientious land owners who know this will be the main selling point of all development project here in the future, it will so easily become exploited in a very bad way that is inevitable.

further south is playa viva development which is exactly what I say the area needs. a very environmentally sensitive development. that actually protects the area from abuses with caring developers.B-)

Money talks and correuption walks (all over everything).

I sincerely believe a consortium of the Sierrs Club, Green Peac, Ducks Unlimited and _________(you fill in the blanks) can overcome the development of the preistine beaches. As long as the market follows the developers you will see more and more beach development (and not good development).

I think you could make a a very sustantial argument that there is no such thing as "good" development of the Mexican publich beaches. Period.

I don't think it's really that simple. For example, the land fronting the beach across the Río Ixtapa from Playa Linda has been bought by a huge consortium that is all ready to build Ixtapa 2.0. It's kind of a shame because in recent years some local families have been doing very well with the arable land adjacent to this property growing organic vegetables and spices. But once construction gets underway that whole way of life will likely come to an end as all the locals go for menial labor jobs during the construction process, due to last for many years. But it should bring relief to the folks in Barrio Nuevo, one of the local communities completely abandoned by every government and where narcos have been working to establish a foothold. I don't believe there will be any real opposition by anyone to this development as long as the remaining minor land disputes are properly settled first (mostly questions of access) and the laws are respected by the developers. Why anyone would want to double the size of Ixtapa when we can't hardly fill the rooms we have is beyond me, but apparently lots of highly connected bigwigs are betting on it.

Playa San Valentín is a much different case. It is an undeveloped rural area where local folks hope to see nature preserved because it isn't near any major developments. It is a bit of a sanctuary, and the presence of one development there will surely attract others. It is a fragile ecosystem, almost a barrier island, and the very construction of the road between the two large estuaries there has already had detrimental effects on both sides of the road, affecting both the salt producers and the fishermen. In their case I side with the locals who don't wish to see any developments at all there besides the very few enramada seafood restaurants.
