Over on Jose Morelos, atop (I think) the dried-out dredgings from Las Salinas, there's a group sitting under a large tent that has banners proclaiming:
"Colonos de la Salinas de Zihuatanejo A.C."
and
"Asociacion Civil de Posesionarios de Terrenos de la Salinas"

Folks who forgot they were paid for the land they stole around 40 years ago. The lagoon used to be simply a huge mud puddle, but in the early 70's mangroves began growing there and Mother Nature worked some magic so that instead of being a nasty mudhole it began to look kind of nice, like a lagoon. So some unscrupulous folks decided "hey, before folks get hip around here I'll just claim that land for me" and for years no one ran them off land that had been gained from the sea, technically speaking, that should not be habitable. So about 25 years ago when the marina project started up the government expropriated the land they had claimed and paid them to move off it back to their original homes. When the recent dredging project occurred they removed their symbolic shack that had been used to demarcate what they were still claiming, so when the project was over the local government decided enough of this funny stuff and removed them by force when they tried to return and build a new shack. At least that's the best condensed version of this story I've been able to piece together.
This region has a long history of stuff like this: protesters and squatters who protest and protest until they get paid off numerous times by governments reluctant to simply apply the law or to use public force.

NEVER, if you keep your ear to the ground.
For example, yesterday other land thieves, the garbage scavengers that we call pepenadores, yesterday blocked access to the municipal dump claiming the garbage was getting too close to their shanty homes, the ones built on land they don't own and certainly never paid for. That's the nerve some lawbreaking folks have and the way they've been conditioned to behave by populist governments loathe to simply apply the law for fear of losing any votes.
Oh, and in the police section of the newspaper yesterday: "Lady injured after falling from her wheelchair in Las Mesas", "Man injured falling from electric post". THAT'S what passes for news here since the so-called reporters are too kow-towed to actually report.

Oh, and in the police section of the newspaper yesterday: "Lady injured after falling from her wheelchair in Las Mesas", "Man injured falling from electric post". THAT'S what passes for news here since the so-called reporters are too kow-towed to actually report.
There is always room in the news for a daily ribbon cutting or two with local politicians.
Right now the newspapers are full of paid crap pretending to pass for news assuring us that each candidate, including the one often posing in the newspapers with the folks from Por Los Niños, is the most popular. One is pictured giving láminas to a poor woman, another says he has the support of all the lawyers (as if that's supposed to reassure us), another promises he's truly the most popular because he can give away the most tortas and bottled water to poor folks who come pretend to be his supporters.
But the really good news is that the brother of the ex-governor Ángel Aguirre has been arrested and jailed on charges of corruption along with about 20 other folks all linked to the ex-governor who resigned after the students were disappeared. Perhaps a long-awaited cleanup of Guerrero has begun? Sure wish the federal authorities would focus more on Zihuatanejo!

The "Juntos Somos Zihua" posters still seem to be 'winning", if quantity is any measure. But didn't whichever candidate was behind that slogan lose a run-off to be the PRI candidate for Presidente Municipal? You'd mentioned that he was challenging the result of that run-off election, claiming, one presumes, that the vote was rigged. (Imagine that! Rigged? Outrageous!) What happened?

On a more personal level, when will the barrage of campaign noise begin?
Actually that guy lost the opinion poll to determine his candidacy, but since he made such a big score while he was one of the bigwigs in our local government (and later his brother whom he amazingly was allowed to appoint to replace him in blatant violation of all kinds of ethical regulations), he has gotten real generous with that money to buy more loyalty, and he raised such a stink that he got the poll results to be ignored by the state party leaders. That was after he had signed an agreement to respect the results of the poll, which he of course didn't respect. But lies and deception are the typical tools of the trade for corrupt politicians. The problem is the poverty these creeps create makes it easier for them to simply buy the votes they need. So expect more land invasions (and Por Los Niños can help build their classrooms!) and the selling of votes between now and election time. It's a dirty nasty cycle that just keeps repeating itself.
