Storm hits us again

by Paulf @, Mount Sterling, Ky 40353, Thursday, March 05, 2015, 14:51 (4265 days ago)

It was 60F Tuesday with drizzle and last night(Wed) the rain turned to snow after raining all day (34F). A funny thing looking out the window on the 2nd floor now- Kathie has our electric leaf blower out clearing paths in the front. The snow is about 8 inches deep. I made a path to the garage so she could get her blower out. Kentucky has really been hit hard. National Guard was called out and is helping stranded motorist on I65 south of Louisville close to Elizabethtown. The last storm she could not get her car out for a week- the only way out our drive was with my Ram 4x4- hopes it goes in 4 wheel because I had to get it worked on because would not come out of H 4x4.

There is no relevance between the 2. There are a lot of us from the Mid West that love "Z" and the posting of the storms makes everyone experiencing a storm wish they were back in "Z"- also get off your high horse for it is your option to read a post or not. Most of us are only able to experience the area a couple of weeks a year(we had 3 weeks in Jan & Feb and wish we were still there especially when a storm goes through our area).

Don't pay him any never no mind, Paul. Rude and discourteous folks like that aren't worth our attention.

I've been in touch with some old friends just west of you in Lawrenceburg and Louisville and I heard I-65 was a mess with miles and miles of folks trapped all night in their cars (including Jesse Jackson's wife) and NO help from the local or state governments. Shameful and dangerous! Kentucky can do better! Hope all is well with you and your family. Stay safe! Spring is just around the corner and we'll all be drinking mint juleps soon enough!

I-65 south yesterday between Hardin and Bullitt counties. SCARY!

Thanks Rob. As you know there are a lot of us from the Mid West and we all care when some one is going through a bad situation no matter what it is. Our only problem was water coming in from above the sliding glass door again (the drip woke me up at 2:15 AM)- the person doing the windows and siding did not realize when there are no eaves, you need L channel above the windows. Storms are bad no matter where they occur.

I don't want to upset anyone with non-Zihua-related trivia, but when we visited Little Bighorn in Montana a few years ago, we were surprised to see that one of Custer's men who died there that day at the age of 28 had the same not-so-common surname as us, (no, not HolyMole !). Research revealed he was a farmer from Breckenridge County, Kentucky. Further digging shows that Breckenridge County has some of the most complete genealogical records in the USA......so one of these days we may take a slight detour to Kentucky on the way down to Zihua, and see if he might be "family".

I think this being my website and me being from Kentucky is all the connection Paul in Lexington needs to write anything he wants about Kentucky. I know it's not fair or Democratic and it reeks of privilege and elitism, but there it is. Me and Abe, both born in log cabins in rural Kentucky. Who'd a thunk it?

As Rob can tell you, Kentucky is like no other State. For anyone that loves their Bourbon, the big attraction now is the Bourbon Trail. The Trail is going from 1 of the Bourbon Distilleries to another. The popularity is drawing people all over the US and Canada- most of the Distilleries have remodeled their gift shop- you get a pass port at the first one you go to if a member of the Bourbon Trail and have it stamped and if you complete the Trail there is a small gift. The Trail is a good way to see Kentucky and also visit the distilleries- we took a friend to Makers Mark last summer and there was a corvette convention going on where the Vettes are made- the parking lot was full of corvettes from the old to the new. Anyone wishing to visit the area let me know.

We drove through Kentucky in the late 60's, I-75 north, from Tennessee to Ohio, stayed in Lexington. First time we'd ever come across roads called "pikes".
Breckenridge County is tiny, population only 21,000, county seat is Hardinsburg. It's on my bucket list.

I may be biased, but I think Kentucky is the most beautiful state of all. More miles of running creeks, streams and rivers than any other state except Alaska. The most beautiful farmlands and forests, and when you get over in the Appalachians, Red River Gorge and Cumberland the magic gets serious. I love the drive down 1-65 from Louisville best though the I-75 run to Cincinatti ain't too bad, but the backroads of central and eastern Kentucky and Tennessee are pure magic just about everywhere you go, and it's hard to resist stopping in every little town or every lookout point or waterfall or cliff or cave or every bridge over a river. You just want to soak in all the details of one of the oldest and still mysterious regions of the country. ;-)

We are about 30 min from Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge(as a child we use to play at Natural Bridge and do the long hike up to the bridge and now there is a chair lift during the summer). On the road to Natural Bridge is the famous poisonous snake zoo- the owner is always getting bite milking the snakes for their venom. For people that do not know Kentucky, there are State Resort Parks all over the state each has it's own venue. Natural Bridge State Park(close to us) has a natural bridge at the crest of the peak with a bridge carved by wind and water, Carter Caves is known for its caves, Cumberland Falls S.R.P. is known for it's moon bow happening on a full moon if there is no fog- Victoria Falls in Africa is the only other known falls having a moon bow. Red River Gorge is famous for its trails and rock climbing.

That is how I learned that I had relatives (Collings family) in Kentucky when it was still Virginia. They did indeed fight in the revolutionary war and were given land grants in the wild frontier of Indiana.

Most of us that are 3rd or more generations can trace our ancestry back. My grandfather was a Crawford, 1 of the men was a Crawford that came to KY with Daniel Boone and he was given a land grant by Boone on the North Fork of the Kentucky River- grandpa was his great grandson(who grew up pore and died pore and all he had was a small farm on a bend of the North Fork of the KY River). The Kentucky River was a gateway to the mountains then. 3 rivers come together near Beattyville (North Fork, Middle Fork and South Fork) and becomes the Kentucky River that flows into the Ohio River between Louisville and Cincinnati.

Incisors: You are a very small, small rude man. You are rude for no reason other than to be rude. You must be really unhappy with the cards life has dealt you to be so forever vigilant looking for any opportunity to make your nasty comments. I for one wish you would internalize your feelings and let your acidic comments and mean spirit impact only on you.
