We found our caretaker/handyma, Jose, on the floor this morning, barely able to move. The maids had called a nurse for him. Later, we heard from another local friend that she's been putting mosquito repellant on her kids to fend off chikungunya, a mosquito-borne virus that can cause extreme pain throughout the body and last for a week to months.
Checking w/ Jose on the nurse's diagnosis, he confirmed that, indeed, he has it. Anyone else affected by this?

I would hope the city starts spraying again to try and do something to stop the mosquitos and this Dengue outbreak.
On the lighter side of a serious issue, maybe 3 years ago I was sitting having dinner at Rufo's, and he was quite busy. The spray truck came by not once but twice, after which bugs started dropping out of the palapa roof onto the tables...the boss wasn't happy....

I'm sure it'll comfort you to know that many of the older locals still call bug spray "DDT" (day day tay).

Charming. Fortunately, I'm old enough that my DNA can't have too much more damage done to it....

We have 2 employees at the hotel I stay with confirmed cases of dengue but I know of 2 others with this new virus and it's a nasty one. Like Carol mentioned, the city better start spraying for moskitoes before it becomes an epidemy as dengue is bad enough and what I hear is that lately it is one of the worst strain of dengue that is being found. But this new virus is a scary one as you can feel lasting effects and in the ederly it can kill...

This ARTICLE explains that of the two, only the latter causes extreme arthritis pain in joints.
While bemoaning the lack of municipal mosquito control, wouldn't it also be a good time to promote wider spread use of nets and repellants?

With its possible life-long effects, Chikungunya sure sounds nasty. Ironic that victims of bites from the wrong mosquitos might pray it's "only" dengue.
The article you've linked says that NSAID's should be avoided for symptomatic relief - at least in the case of chikungunya - but Wikipedia suggests their use is appropriate. Since the disease was apparently only identified in 1955, there's obviously a lot to learn.
Any place where it was considered prudent to sleep under mosquito nets and apply repellent 24 hours a day would not be at the top of our list of vacation destinations. We used a net a few years ago while staying at Casa Loma Bonita overlooking Playa La Madera, but it stifled any breeze to the point where we got rid of it. Then it was mosquito coils and repellent every night. Like many other couples, the mosquitos love me but ignore Mrs. H.
Unleash the spray trucks, I say.

Actually, Wikipedia says this in it's dengue article -
"Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is used for fever and discomfort while NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and aspirin are avoided as they might aggravate the risk of bleeding"
The reference in the Wikipedia article on chikungunya is confusing and contains an error. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is not usually considered an NSAID.

Yes, confusing for sure, because naproxen is an NSAID. As noted, chikungunya is a "new" disease.

A sign that there are lots of mosquitos out there this year?
Or just another example of La Comer's inefficient re-stocking system?
Or of the impending change-over to a Soriana?

Gee, how did we ever get by all those decades without La Comercial in Zihuatanejo? We found everything we needed at the mercado or one of the small mom & pop stores. EVERYTHING! Including mosquito coils. If I could do so over 40 years ago I'm sure you modern folks can more easily do so now that we have paved roads with sidewalks, public transportation, and many more stores.

For years here we never found "everything" we wanted. We still don't. But with La Comer, Merza, Waldo's, and Bodega as well as Sam's it is getting easier. We have checked out two Soriana stores since the news that La Comer was changing. IMO it will not be a step up in the shopping world.

Amigo, there are days when I'm sorely tempted to turn the clock back!
But I have to say this Message Board has come a long way. When I put up my first webpages on GeoCities back when all this internet stuff was still brand new to us here in Zihuatanejo I used to get so much e-mail with so many similar questions that I kept a list of stock answers I would copy and paste into the replies. Then I learned how to install my first Message Board. After years of chasing off the riffraff and whippin' y'all into shape I enjoy seeing many of the regulars reply with answers that often mirror my own. So much so that it's no longer the blind leading the blind, as many other similar style forums often appear to be in comparison, but knowledgeable folks giving excellent advice often based on their own experience, and for that I'm most grateful to my readers who have hung in there with me through thick and thin over the years. You make this such an invaluable resource for the Zihuatanejo community.
One thing many folks may not be aware of is that your comments, concerns and discussions frequently make the local news, and beginning last year I've tried to snap off a photo for posterity of all the newspaper articles about your all's discussions that have made the local news. I suppose I should post them here for your perusal one of these days. You all would be surprised at your effect on the local discussion about matters that concern our community. Thanks much to you all and to the good folks at Despertar de la Costa! You're making a positive difference!

THE STATE OF GARBAGE AROUND THE AREA
by Helene
, Zih, Wednesday, March 18, 2015, 14:37 (4252 days ago) @ ZihuaRob
Well I hope this will be post that makes it to the papers. Driving around lately, I have noticed that Garbage is being strewn all over, much more then in past years. What is happening that this is being allowed? We went out to El Tiburon today and driving out that way and coming back through the back road to Zihutanejo, all we saw was LOTS of garbage totally littering the highways and local neighborhoods. It's disgraceful that this beautiful place has this problem. Can't something be done to make people aware? Where is the government? Why aren't they helping to restore this beautiful area?

This ARTICLE explains that of the two, only the latter causes extreme arthritis pain in joints.

The mosquitoes that cause Dengue are daytime mosquitoes, so the use of nets is of no help. Because most homes are open to the air if there is not widespread fumigation one would need to be covered head to toe with poison 24/7.
"Dengue virus is primarily transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, particularly A. aegypti.[4] These mosquitoes usually live between the latitudes of 35° North and 35° South below an elevation of 1,000 metres (3,300 ft).[4] They typically bite during the day, particularly in the early morning and in the evening,[19][20] but they are able to bite and thus spread infection at any time of day all during the year.[21] Humans are the primary host of the virus,[4][14] but it also circulates in nonhuman primates.[22] An infection can be acquired via a single bite.[23] A female mosquito that takes a blood meal from a person infected with dengue fever, during the initial 2–10 day febrile period, becomes itself infected with the virus in the cells lining its gut.[24] About 8–10 days later, the virus spreads to other tissues including the mosquito's salivary glands and is subsequently released into its saliva. The virus seems to have no detrimental effect on the mosquito, which remains infected for life.[6] Aedes aegypti is particularly involved, as it prefers to lay its eggs in artificial water containers, to live in close proximity to humans, and to feed on people rather than other vertebrates.[6]"
Chikungunya? Let me tell ya...
by Cindy in Oregon, Monday, March 16, 2015, 15:34 (4254 days ago) @ JeffMN
My husband contracted it after a visit in the first part of December to Puerto Vallarta. After 21 lab tests and a consult from an infectious disease specialist they finally determined it was Chikungunya. He is ok now and was lucky not to have the joint pain/fever last more than a month and a half. Just a note...it apparently started spreading into Mexico within the last year or so. It was originally from Africa, then moved into the Caribbean (including parts of Florida) and finally made it's way into Mexico. Fun times!
Cindy
