I shot this photo yesterday morning, and apparently soon afterwards someone arrived with a chainsaw and cut down one of the old tamarind trees that's been there forever. Not sure who or why, but if no one there including the fishermen, Navy personnel, port captain personnel nor any other locals present did anything to stop it from happening then perhaps we just don't deserve to have anything nice and you and I are just wasting each other's time.

It's election year and the slick willies at city hall are trying to pull fast ones to help their own causes to the detriment of the general population and our tourism. They fast-tracked some zoning changes to bring Zihuatanejo a big step closer to becoming JUST LIKE ACAPULCO by wiping out over 50% of what's left of our natural areas so they could accommodate the squatters and their new building projects (cement is what makes campaigns go round). Although its legality is dubious and local civil engineers and other concerned citizens are contesting it via the courts and appeals to our rather odd interim governor, the leader of several squatter communities (who actually has a warrant out for his arrest but somehow never seems to get arrested) had the audacity to publicly criticize the responsible citizens for trying to block the zoning changes by claiming they were "affecting 3,000 families", to which I and others quickly fired back that his land thievery was affecting tens of thousands of hard-working law-abiding families.

Add to the socio-political cacophony a cryptic announcement by the region's most popular morning radio talk show host that he would be leaving his program after making an announcement on April 21st, and we've got all the makings of some serious drama.

The game is a-foot. I love it! ;-)

A few weeks ago they cut down the last big tree down in front of the shell vendors in front of Casa Elvira's. It had been trimmed and trimmed, but it is all gone now. So gone you can never tell it was there.

Actually the tree was neglected to death because they cemented it in and didn't even leave any space around the trunk. That tree had been there for over 50 years. And the "shell vendors", who stole the land they occupy to begin with, cemented over the spot and quickly stole another meter of the public walkway by extending their roof. Since we effectively have no functional city government right now it appears to be every man for himself and steal all you can. See any choice hillside you'd like to own?

You certainly have that right. Sort of the same way the choked the tree down by Daniels and then were surprised when it fell down.

When they got rid of the tree they extended their roof so they would get back the shade the tree furnished. Sorry for them it is not the same. Walking from the pier to the Cancha it is horribly hot until you get down to where there are still trees. We certainly need to watch that someone does not decide not to have those trees also. The cement gets closer and closer to them and one day they will kill them also. That is what they did to the trees that used to be on our little street also. It is a shame that people here do not understand how important the trees are.

And on another note...They have torn down the statue in front of the pier to erect another one. The government hard at work to spend/steal more money.
