Does anyone know about the turtle release programs? Are they specific to certain times during the year? How do you locate them? We will be there mid june. Thanks!

Most Olive Ridley turtles lay eggs during the summer time May, june, july, Aug. The female comes to shore to lay a clutch of eggs 80- 120 and will return to same spot around 2 weeks later to do this again while her mate waits for her in the sea. The eggs take around 50 plus? days to incubate, they usually hatch in the dark and walk towards the light of the moon or shore lights but towards the ocean when it is all working right and the turtles are returned to the sea . The hotels here try to participate and have a vivero or pen to relocate the eggs until they hatch but unfortunately they do not provide enough space for the nest and there is contamination and wrong temperatures for the eggs . Tronconies has a larger turtle pen and Playa Michigan located in Tenexpa 2 hours towards Acapulco both have bigger hatching grounds. Boca Chica and playa Michigan are taking in over 10 thousand eggs every season and are in need of volunteers during september and october to release turtles who have been incubating. Volunteers from all around the world come to collect eggs , working during the night and helping to relocate the eggs to a safe place. All these turtles hatch after the majority of volunteers leave. The local community has to come together to release the turtles once they hatch . Sometimes as many as 2000 hatch in one morning or night and it is a job to collect them and release. The beaches are remote and volunteers have to camp out so not to many older volunteers. If anyone is interested in working for a week in september october in the vivero's please let me know I will be happy to go with you. I am no expert but i worked in a Viva Mexico program with the Olive Ridley turtle for 3 years and helped until it wore me out, the real work is backbreaking.
