Great float day but Willy Chilly

Met the most interesting woman and her daughter at about 5' depth for a communal "bob". I was ecstatic. The woman could speak only Spanish and her daughter, unclear if in college or still in high school was studying both English and French and was the best translator I ever had for all the "stump words" that leave me dangling once a conversation advances so far beyond superficial that I start tripping over myself and looking cross eyed.

I was cold and today the water seemed colder than any day in the last couple of months. Today was a unique "see your toes day", one of only 3 in the same amount of time. In a matter of our 30 minute conversation, six feet apart we had a pelican dive between the two of us and also the black diving duck pop up. Then a fish that looked to be 4' long literally made a swirl like a toilet flushing and whatever was swimming just two feet away perhaps disappeared. It had to be the duck was my largest suspicion.

Anyway the lady said they were natives of Zihua but her husband was in the military and they had been stationed all over the country and didn't get back that often but recently were lucky enough to be stationed here at the momennt. She then went on to explain the 3 events that happened in a time period of 15 minutes while we were talking were extremely strange. She said the water was unseasonably cold and there in the cove for the first time in history a mother whale and her calf had been spotted in the bay. She said on several occasions dolphins had also been spotted in the bay. She attributed it to climate change. Father then too soon whistled and mother/daughter returned to the family gathering on the beach while I remained to do my daily wave riding ritual. Super encounter but it made me wonder if anyone else was following along with these stories and has anyone any further info?

Well, it's good to see you interacting with locals, but either something was lost in translation, or someone isn't as knowledgeable about our bay as she might appear. Probably because of her youth she doesn't have the memories and experiences that others of us have.

We've had whales in the bay before. This year isn't the first time by a long shot. I've seen photos of other instances. And dolphins in the bay is also quite normal, though there used to be more when there wasn't so much boat activity in the bay.

The water is actually at its seasonal average temperature, but yes, it feels cool to locals. It'll likely remain this way until late April.

Pelicans diving and cormorants (patos buzos) swimming around fishing is nothing new. The folks who swim and fish off the downtown beach each morning experience these things daily. It's a good sign that our bay remains relatively healthy, in spite of the damage it's suffered especially since the construction of the espigón at Puerto Mío.
