Thanks Talley for alerting me .
In December , the USDA placed an embargo on ruminants , equines and canines coming from Mexico into the United States effective immediately .
It threw people traveling with dogs into a panic as the USDA required a govt vet to do the physical exam for screwworm and stamp the health certificate . At the time , there was maybe 20 such licensed vets in all of Mexico . I was returning to the USA for a few weeks right after the embargo so I contacted the western regional office of USDA outlining how it would be impossible to meet their stated requirements . I did receive a time sensitive letter from the USDA authorizing my normal vet in Zihuatanejo to perform the exam and write a added note indicating the exam and no evidence of screwworms . I returned to the USA and the CDC customs without an issue with a regular health exam . I’d been in touch with SENASICA about this problem . They did issue a two day virtual class for screwworm licensing . A few vets from Zihuatanejo applied and were declined due to not having a different govt licensing first . There are currently no vets in Zihua that can meet the official requirement . But airlines snd customs as of yesterday are continuing to allow any vets health certificate .

There is one vet each in Acapulco , Uruapan and Patzcuaro that can provide the actual screw worm verification . It must be 5 days before flight or border crossing .

I’m continuing to talk to both agencies . USDA has acknowledged that domestic personal pets pose little to no screwworm risk and reform “might “ be needed . I’m pushing for that . A regular health exam with screwworm screening is more than adequate . I’m working with my personal vet , Nutrizoo , to get them and at least one other vet here verified through SENSICA. A group of vets here are working together to get this done .
I’m returning in April to the US with my dogs and I’ve got a network of concerned dog travelers reporting on daily acceptance of a regular health certificate . It’s not resolved but it’s manageable as of today .
I’ve had previous success with lobbying USDA for modification of regulations regarding Mexico pet travel , I’ll continue to advocate a more workable solution .
