RIP Sly Stone
My very first "rock concert" was Sly and the Family Stone at Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY. I believe it was in the late spring of '68. We drove there in a big red convertible Cadillac that belonged to my mother's boyfriend. After the concert we decided to drive to Cincinnati to see a laser show at the library the following day. After Strawberry Alarm Clock played, Sly and the Family Stone came on and took command of the audience. Their songs were popular on the radio, and we had one of their albums, but no way was I prepared for one of the very best concerts of my life. It didn't take long for me to realize that Sly had the entire audience in the palm of his hand. He could've told us to do anything, and we'd've done it. He had us singing along to his songs and dancing on our chairs, while the audience members all passed joints up and down the rows. Then they played "Wanna Take You Higher" as their final song and knocked it out of the park, of course playing it again after we all screamed MORE for five minutes. Thousands of us walked out of Freedom Hall singing that song for days. And boy did I have a story to share with my classmates at school the following Monday. I was already the youngest hippie in Louisville, I played the drums, and I was a bit of an oddity to most folks, which I was used to. But to this day my first concert remains one of the very best I ever attended. When the movie Woodstock came out a couple of years later, I could really relate to the Sly and the Family Stone scene. Of course he was one of the best at Woodstock! Really sad to hear of his passing today. I am everyday people. Yeah yeah.

While Huracán Bárbara and Tormenta Tropical Cosme churn past our coast, we enjoyed a picture-postcard-perfect day in Zihuatanejo and all along the Costa Grande today after a light rain fell while we slept Sunday night. A nice breeze and moderate temperatures made the day extremely comfortable, and there's a cool breeze this Monday evening that made our evening stroll even more pleasant and that guarantees us another refreshing night's sleep. What an idyllic place to be.
It still looks like we're going to have a hurricane form up in front of our coast by the end of this week. Much closer than the last one. Keep an eye on our local weather.
Chalupas for breakfast. Chile Relleno for lunch. Not a day goes by that I don't give thanks for the delicious local foods we eat. Pizza on Sunday is the closest thing to Gringo food we ever eat.
I was saddened and concerned to hear of an attempted car-jacking today that happened to one of my readers as they drove near Puente Lagunillas between La Salidita and Troncones. Fortunately they escaped alive and unharmed, but things could've turned out very different. There have been dozens of carjackings over the years in that very region, and local residents and tourist lodging operators need to keep demanding more vigilance and better public security by the local police who apparently get paid to show up 45 minutes after any incident occurs. Less than useless. Public security begins in the community, in the municipio, not in offices of outsiders hundreds of kilometers away. The Guardia Nacional are doing what they can, but they aren't from here and don't know the region like locals.

Never had the opportunity to see him live, but he was truly a master and one of my favorites and an all time great. "I just want to thank you for letting me be myself, again"

Did Marley and the Wailers open for Sly in their first big American performance? I remember some reaction to the reggae band along the lines of "Where are these guys from -- the Old Testament?"

Yes, I saw one of those concerts at Tampa Stadium, my first stateside concert after leaving St. Croix in the USVI, where the dumbphucks BOOed Bob Marley. Years later they'd be begging for his return and pretending to be rastas. I was dancing on my seat (again) at that concert because Bob Marley was already quite popular in the Caribbean and we loved his music. I was amazed at the stupidity of the Floridians.
