Does the Collective Shuttle drop you off at some central location, or take you to your destination? (We're staying at a place not far from Plaza Kioto).

(Personally, I'd schlep our bags over to Andy's store and grab the Aeropuerto combi, but She Who Must Be Obeyed says "No way".)

Playa Larga taxis (reply)

I agree with Charlie the Cruise Ship Guy and I DO live here for a good part of the year. What taxi drivers go through to earn their living is beyond my ability to determine. On the rare occasions when we do take a taxi we have no problem returning to Zihuatanejo with the taxis available wherever we may happen to be, whether ixtapa, Troncones or Playa Blanca. Having driven a taxi several times in the States I know that every city has its's written and unwritten rules, and there will always be those trying to "beat the system". We try to be ever mindful that we are guests t in this great country which has been generous in allowing us to to make our home here. We pick our battles carefully. Straightening out the taxis, unions, mafia or just plain folks as they may be is not on our list. Seems kind of whiney, to be honest.

I hardly think being threatened and extorted and forced to change taxis from one you trust and have an arrangement with to one you don't know who is threatening you is being "whiney" or trying to "beat the system". The customer should be free to choose to use the service they want. Hiring a taxi to drop you off and come back for you at a prearranged time is a common practice around the world, especially in a remote location such as Playa Larga where one cannot count on finding a taxi available.

These tactics have been scaring away our tourists for years. Everyone including many taxi drivers agree that this type of behavior should not and cannot be tolerated. The instant someone blocks you from being able to move freely you are being kidnapped, and that's how this should be treated.

Our driver told us last week he got grief from the Larga taxis & could still pick us up @ Hotel Marbella but not 4 Hermanos or Popeyes. We try to share our time around. This week was back to Marbella which they followed him part way, blocked both lanes & waited. He said he didn't want no trouble, otherwise I would've taken pics of this confrontation & posted it. Also were two drivers we've never seen before! We have other times called & had great service from the usual Larga taxis.

You can also leave a message for the local Director of Turismo at the Ayuntamiento. He should be made aware of this. Ayuntamiento de Zihuatanejo --> (755) 554-4455

Maybe it is all made up crap but the mob rules. We have a favorite taxi guy that takes us everywhere from the Azul Grand. I plan out trips in advance as he needs to get there and wait a minimum of an hour with the other taxis before he is allowed to pick us up. Then of course there are the rates that are charged to be picked up at the Azul Grand vs. Playa Linda. No chance of me going out there and trying to intervene, screw up his job and then fly home. As a 1 week per year guy I'm not looking to change the rules, I'll leave that to the locals as I don't expect tourists to fix the problems where I live. Es su problema no el mio.

Playa Larga taxis (reply)

Hola
We were at Playa Larga today. We have a favourite taxi guy that we like to use take us there. We made arrangements for him to pick us up at 4:30,like we have done every week since we arrived in October. When we were leaving, the local taxis blocked the road so we couldn't get out. After a short discussion, we were told that our taxi was not allowed to pick us up unless he asked their permission to do so. Our taxi guy then told us that he could still take us there, but we had to use the local Larga taxis to get home. Same thing happened at the Irma a few years ago. Maybe we will just take the combi coming home from now on.

I hope you took pictures or at least got their unit numbers and reported them to PROFECO or at least the municipal authorities so there is at least a record of the incident. The client has every right in the world to request any taxi driver they trust and like to come pick them up at the beach. The taxi mafia is out of control because the politicians won't enforce laws against them, but PROFECO is a federal entity and they can sanction the offenders without fear of political reprisal.

If you made prior arrangements to be picked up THAT IS YOUR RIGHT. The taxi unions do NOT make the laws, and the laws do not say you have to use any particular taxi union or group of taxis at any location. They like to make crap like this up and then intimidate people into believing it's true. Please do not just let it slide or it will continue happening.
