Agreed that having sharks appear in these waters is nothing new. My neighbour, a dive-shop operator, confirmed that just this morning. What is new, and may be triggering these attacks on people might be related to climatic change. What recently provoked that tropical storm off Acapulco, to convert to a Cat. 5 hurricane in a matter of hours, may also be affecting shark behaviour?

Some of the local fishermen say it is normal for sharks to come close to shore at this time of year to spawn, but they speculate that the absence of schools of anchovies due to overfishing may be affecting their eating habits.
