I don't want to call out this restaurant because they are a good group and it was not their fault but attending a local restaurant where people where camping nearby, as I left the restaurant the police had arrived and 3 of them were robbed about 8PM a couple of days ago. Very upset first time for them after coming here for over 20 years every year they say. Petty thief pilfering through the place. They said some clothing, beach items, shoes but the largest loss was a very expensive camera was taken.

The lady was very upset and I was wondering if there are any places anyone knows where she might go in town like pawn shops to try to find her camera or is it a "done deal"?

Details are a bit fuzzy....trying to guess which restaurant might have people camping nearby. Were the victims campers, or restaurant patrons? lf the latter, I'd like to know which restaurant would allow a "petty thief pilfering through the place."

On thefts in general, read the accounts in the local papers of an incident a few days ago in a small town, or towns, along the Zihuatanejo-Cd. Altamirano highway where unmarked white vans and, reportedly, "soldiers" with their identifying badges covered, shook down an entire village or villages. This is lawless Guerrero at its worst.

I'm afraid you misinterpreted or misunderstood what's happening in the sierra of Zihuatanejo and Petatlán. The military set up roadblocks that residents beholding to narcos complained about. Narcos are trying to take over the region of the sierra where the military is trying to restore order. The military aren't the bad guys here.

I took the Spanish-language news story from local media and ran it through the Google translate link on your Message Board. I didn't interpret or misinterpret anything. If anyone has misunderstood or misinterpreted, it must be Google or the news media. Regardless, anonymous white vans full of anonymous "soldiers" has seldom been a good sign. But then again, who can keep track of events in Guerrero? We recall that in the years when we used to drive our vehicle down from Canada, we were regularly warned to stay clear of the Zihua-Altamirano highway, so it sounds like nothing has changed.

Translation problems aside, your error is reading the news article without context, and perhaps believing it was written by a reporter. The recent problem in the sierra is actually an old problem. My goodness, I was writing about it on one of my blogs over 10 years ago. It takes more than one poorly-written media note to grasp the broader picture. And though the federal government is trying to deal with it with the military and Guardia Nacional, notice there's not a peep from the local government, and the state has its hands full trying to cooperate with the federal government while also pursuing its own agenda. Arrests last year in the sierra of Petatlán, the recent massacre at the palenque in Petatlán, and the use of drones to bomb villages in the sierra of Petatlán are some of the incidents that have made the news that you may have heard about that, but villages in the sierra of Zihuatanejo have also been under attack. Entire villages have been abandoned, returned to their homes, abandoned again and remain in a state of flux. All so that tens of millions of Gringos can have the stupidly banned popular recreational substances their so-called representative government denies them.
