ZIHguen Llegando Las Tortugas Marinas
Saturday evening the Plaza del Artista was busy with artists, locals and visitors when a sea turtle came out of the ocean onto the beach next to Casa Arcadia and laid her eggs. Unfortunately no one told the tourists not to take photos using flash. The nest was barely above the waterline instead of high on the beach like they used to lay them before bright lights were installed along the entire length of Playa Principal by the municipal government during their latest "remodeling". The Bomberos came and rescued the eggs to move to the incubation pen at La Ropa, which isn't correct since there should be a pen on Playa Principal, but hopefully they'll survive, unlike too many that hatched the day before in the middle of the temporary beach soccer area who were disoriented by the lights and had great difficulty navigating all the deep footprints from the evening's match. Maybe they could turn off the lights at night after smoothing the sand before leaving? I know of more nests in that same area.
Lots of visitors were in town this Sunday. Certainly good to see. As I've said repeatedly, I believe we're still receiving some folks who would've normally gone to Acapulco except for the damage from hurricanes Otis and John, and hopefully that will translate into more regular visitors for us. The beachfront restaurants weren't exactly full downtown, but there were certainly many foreigners enjoying the cultural entertainment at the Cancha Municipal along with locals and visitors as well as dining at some of the waterfront restaurants this evening. Tourist season returns slowly but surely to Zihuatanejo.
The thunderstorms passed us by Saturday evening. We never saw any rain here in downtown Zihuatanejo. More clouds were in the area this Sunday evening, which may be our last chance for rain for quite a while. Keeping fingers crossed we get some more precipitation.
