Mexico’s Fluid Spanish Language

I know that in France and in Quebec there are government agencies that regulate language. I don’t know whether there is one in Spain. But Mexican Spanish seems to me to be both fluid and localized.

I recall having seen

Cerveza
Cervesa
Cerbesa and
Cerbeza

Thirty years ago, in the pre-gringo era, in the Troncones area, “restaurante” was commonly spelt “restaurant”. It seems that this was not an anglicization. One of the first people with a sign ran out of space so just dropped the “e”. Others followed suit.

In La Majahua, pigs were commonly referred to as “porqui”, but not in nearby Troncones. It seems that decades ago, someone from La Majahua was somewhere and saw a Porkie the Pig cartoon and brought the word back.

And some might remember a restaurant on Calle Cuauhtémoc in Zihuatanejo with the name “Restaurante Económico Caro”. What? “Economical, Expensive Restaurant”?

Nope. Another example of a sign painter running out of room, so “Carol” didn’t get her whole name on the sign for her economical restaurant.

Another of my favourites… I saw this in Sonora

Quentukqui Pollo Frito
