Hemingway had a good assessment of his own style:
"What another writer would be content to leave in massive proportions, I polish into a tiny gem." The 2016 movie about Thomas Wolfe, called Genius, was not afraid to show that his greatest flaw was verbosity. Ernest recognized Wolfe's talent and volunteered to send him out to the Dry Tortugas to exorcise all those extra words from his prose.
Holds for science too. Starting a postdoc at Univ Arizona I couldn't help but be impressed by the massive PhD dissertation about Manduca sexta genetics of a previous graduate student lying on the shelf above my desk. My boss straightened it out for me: "Come on, give me a break,if he had any consistent results he would not have had to bullshit for 600 pages."
