Ruins of old house or hotel on walk to Las Gatas

by Mikey, Friday, December 28, 2018, 14:59 (1614 days ago)

I would like to hear the story of this building that has been ruins for years. It’s at the base of the hill as you walk the path towards Las Gatas from Playa La Ropa. I’ve walked up the first 4 flights of steps to where the narrow gauge tracks end. Clearly this was the means of getting supplies, and maybe people, in and out of the place.

Was it once a hotel called something del Rey? Do any photos exist? And how did it come to be in its present state? When was its heyday? It was probably rather grand in its day.

Wouldn't you know that question's been asked here a time or two. I only had drinks there once or twice about 44 years ago when it first opened. Here's probably the best version of the Capricho del Rey's history.

Did she write more? The 2nd installment says to be continued and the actual demise seems to be missing.

Fascinating story . Laura is an amazing story teller . I’m sure she’s crazy busy this time of year but I’d love to hear more . I’d love for her to write a book someday on her own adventures . She’s an amazing person .

There is a book titled “Mexico: some travels and travelers there” by Alice Adams. It’s available used through Amazon and our library has it. She has a very good account of the the building and the story of the owner. Well worth the read.

Never seen that abbreviation before, but I'm gonna guess it stands for "If I Recall Correctly". Am I close? Something they teach in Texting 101?

Altona? Really? I grew up in Beausejour! Left in 1968 never to return.

The chapters Alice Adams gives to Zihuatanejo are just such a wonderful slice of time. Not all glossy pretty (for sure) but very good. She stopped coming to Zihuatanejo in about 1988. So she is writing about a certain time. And if you are a Catalina person, especially an old time Catalina person, it’s delicious. Just saying, Catalina people. I enjoy reading rereading it when I am lonesome.

Thank you for posting this story, I would truly appreciate anyone that may have picked up some of the old stories around the Sotavento from the days when a few famous and infamous folks would hang out and the wild parties they had. I also always wondered what happened to all of the photos that adorned the walls of that place we enjoyed looking at them (I sure hope someone has them in a safe place and will publish them at some point). If those walls could speak I am sure we would all pull up a chair and listen. I miss that place terribly, thank god the Catalina has some of the old staff and those memories for now we continue to enjoy and truly appreciate..

Many thanks to this post..cheers
