Dengue continues to be more of a problem here than Covid-19 (the latter of which there have been NO cases in Guerrero for weeks).

A damn shame about all the robberies and holdups going on including to downtown residents and La Ropa tourists while the municipal government apparently does nothing regarding local public security except wait for the federal government to act then pretend the mayor did. Why are Zihuatanejo taxpayers paying for a police force whose only apparent function appears to be to serve as bodyguards for the mayor and to arrive 45 minutes after any act of violence? Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. I suspect el efecto cucaracha is at play as thieves flee from Acapulco.

Remember, El Buen Fin is this weekend from Nov. 17 to Nov. 20. Bargains abound at the big stores!

The Autopista Siglo XXI reopened this Wednesday morning after being closed since the day before due to an accident. Drive defensively and avoid driving on the highways after dark.

Thursday is DÍA DE POZOLE. ¡Buen provecho!

Please consider making a donation to our Cruz Roja Mexicana Delegación Zihuatanejo. Donation info on my Community Notices & Events page.

This weekend is an extra long holiday weekend. There will be no classes Friday or Monday, and Monday, November 20th we celebrate Día de la Revolución Mexicana. There will be a parade downtown on Monday morning at 8 a.m. Expect ATMs to run out of cash.

I’ll be in Zihua soon… alarmed at the news that there has been an
Increase in robberies etc… I’m an oldster travelling solo… one of my
favourite walks is into town from la Ropa (especially Sunday morning)
weekdays for lunch, atm etc…
And evenings on the beach for dinner… should I rethink my behaviour
take taxis to town and take dinners at the hotel? I’ve been going to Zihua
for many decades and have never felt unsafe…so it’s unlikely that
I’ll change my behaviour but I would appreciate input from others on the board.
Thanks,
M

As long as you aren't carrying a backpack and wearing gawdy baubles, you should be perfectly fine taking your morning walks.

If you need to shop, carry one of the local market bags. You can put a strap on it for carrying over your shoulder like I do.

Thanks for what you do on this website, we've been reading your informative posts for years, and can you please give us some more details on the types of tactics being used in the holdups and robberies recently. We'll follow your tips about using a market bag, etc., and mainly we're wondering if the holdups involve weapons and if they're occurring to pedestrians during the day or mostly at night?

I don't have any details. Wish I did. The local papers aren't printing these matters because the government pays them not to, so I only catch snippets here and there. The city police won't comment because we don't really have any, just a bunch of people who wear uniforms and drive city vehicles, act as bodyguards for the mayor, do the mayor's bidding, and show up 45 minutes after any incidents of violence (if at all). The mayor won't comment because he just wants to pour his company's cement and doesn't want to frighten away any potential builders. If it weren't for the coconut telegraph no one would know what's going on.

We received an "all owners" email from our condo complex administrator this morning. There have been three robberies that she knew about and two that were not successful due to other people intervening. The police were notified. It's definitely not in the city's best interest to have the word spread that moneyed tourists are being robbed at gunpoint at the start of high season.

I saw two police cars with flashing lights on Escenica La Ropa this afternoon. Could not tell if they were arresting someone but it was an unusual sight.

There have also been reported incidents of unfortunate activity in Los Achotes and San Jeronminto. Saw some gruesome photos the other day.

Are we really that far from giving Jimmy Buffett the Nobel Peace Prize?

Thanks again for giving us the info on the coconut telegraph that we we can't read anywhere else, and we appreciate whatever news you're able to pass on:) We can also relate to having a longtime mayor where we lived whose own self-interests trumped those of his citizens, to the detriment of the town's wellbeing, so hopefully there will be some positive change here on the political front come election time, eh?

The daytime robberies on Escenica La Ropa are worrisome. The most recent we're aware of was Sunday morning around 8am. Our neighbor was robbed at gunpoint by two men on a motorcycle near the dolphin statues.

We pare down to the absolute minimum. Purses, cellphones and backpacks are left at home. We only carry the pesos we need for the day's outing.

So weird, we live right by the dolphins, are out and about regularly and talk with the neighbors. This is the first we are hearing about it.

Guess we aren't talking to the right people.

I'm wondering if this is related to the unfortunate events in Acapulco?
