Three to five cases of hermorrhagic dengue are being admitted weekly to our regional Hospital General IMSS Bienestar. Let's hope the city gets its act together and starts spraying for mosquitos, hopefully being careful not to kill all the other insects including honeybees in the process. They've been doing some spraying, but ineffectively and inconsistently.

It looks like we'll continue seeing some high surf for the next few days. Here in Zihuatanejo it hasn't been much of a problem, though it's washed out some sand where the fishermen park their boats on the beach in front of the basketball court, I suspect due to the sheer weight of the cement so close to the edge of the water, like when you stand at the water's edge and the sand washes out around your feet. Should be good for surfers at all the favorite local spots from La Barra de Potosí to La Saladita.

The water temp has dropped to 27.1°C, and we sure notice it living next to the water, especially in the morning when the overnight temps are at their lowest. Still no snow in our forecast. ;-)

Be sure to check the calendar of events for the Sailfest on their webpage. The wonderful volunteers have been working extremely hard, and they deserve our gratitude and support.

Also get ready for the upcoming Expo Feria in Troncones starting this Friday. See the calendar of events here on my Community Notices & Events page.

[image]One of Zihuatanejo's most authentic lodgings that best represents the old Zihuatanejo many of us fell in love with is Bambutreehouse. A lovely two-bedroom, two-bath open-air traditional home located on a low hill just a short walk from La Ropa Beach. Features a full-kitchen, daily maid service and wi-fi internet service.

#PobrePueblo

They drove up and down Calle Adelita last night around 10PM spraying people walking. I guess reducing the mosquitoes or the people around ,the result is still a success…. Lower case counts Lol. :-o

Back in '74 when I lived here they drove around with a fogger in the back of a pick-up truck spraying into restaurants where people were eating. There wasn't much we could do except continue eating. FYI, people from my generation still refer to "insecticido" as "DDT" since it apparently was formerly used here, though I don't know exactly when. Hopefully not when I first lived here. :-o

That pick-up truck fogger was operating at least until the mid-2010s. When it came by Carlos and Joa's "the flophouse bar" on Calle del Ejido, all we could do was cover our drinks.

DDT was eliminated from production and use in the United States and Canada in the 1980's. Its use in Mexico was eliminated in 2002. This harmonization of environmental standards and regulation was via the efforts of the tri-national North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation. Since 2002 Mexico has used a combination of biological, other chemical, and public health measures to control mosquitos - an important vector for both malaria and dengue.

Many notable scientists accuse Rachel Carson, author of 'Silent Spring', of fomenting unjustified fear and hysteria around the insecticide DDT, the ensuing ban of which, they believe, caused the Malarial deaths of up to 80 million Africans because of their lack of access to this chemical.
