In our corner of downtown Zihuatanejo people's alarm apps all sounded about the same time just before 8AM this Friday morning as a major seismic event measuring 6.5 occurred in the southern part of our state of Guerrero near San Marcos along the Costa Chica. I could hear dozens of alarms going off in the coffee shop in front of my office, in the street and in the plaza beside our home. Those who were watching Presidenta Claudia Sheinbaum give her morning news conference saw the reporters and the presidenta all get their own alarms and calmly file outside of the Palacio Nacional in Mexico City. The seismic warning app most of us have, like the physical alarms in places like Mexico City, gave us all time to seek a safe place before the actual seismic wave of the earthquake was felt. Fortunately for us, it was very weak here in Zihuatanejo. But we still saw vehicles and lamp posts swaying from the temblor. Our main seismic warning apps continued alerting us to several more of the larger seismic events over 5.0 throughout the day, while our other seismic apps that aren't as timely kept alerting us after the fact to the smaller temblors. By 6PM this evening there had been over 850 replicas of the original seismic event. Several deaths have also been reported due to the earthquake. A warning and a reminder of our own insignificance in this world. Several people in the region of San Marcos in the southern part of Guerrero had their homes and businesses affected, and there were a few landslides including one that blocked the road out of Acapulco towards Zihuatanejo and several on the Autopista del Sol between Acapulco and Cuernavaca.

Other than the seismic events, it was another picture-postcard-perfect day of absolutely spectacular weather. A nice cool night that got down to around 21°C or so, and a nice breeze later in the morning and the afternoon with a high around 32°C. Some cumulus clouds rolled by in the late afternoon, and after sunset a spectacular full moon lit up the bay.

The number of visitors continues to decrease. Highways back to the inland cities have been crowded with people leaving the coast to return to their homes.

Don't forget to visit "Las Iguanas Bazar" in La Ropa next to Casa Tucanes this Saturday and Sunday from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. where you'll find a fun time, the wonderful works of local artisans and merchants, and lots of sustainable products.

Also, the Eco-Tianguis "Sanka" happens every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 1:40 p.m. in the small plaza in front of the Vicente Guerrero school, across the street from the Museo Arqueológico de la Costa Grande in downtown Zihuatanejo by the waterfront where La Boquita canal runs into the bay. Besides wonderful handcrafts, they feature a variety of homegrown produce, fresh foods including pastries, breads and tamales, fresh coffee, juices and mezcal.

How do I get this earthquake alarm on my phone? Thanks.

The app most of us use for timely alarms is called SkyAlert. But Mexican citizens also received an alarm via the presidential emergency system, so it got a bit confusing with the competing alarms. The thing is, they work. In this respect, Mexico appears to be way ahead of the curve. While SkyAlert is also now available in the USA, you need the Mexican app. It may not be available to those of you with foreign telephone numbers.

I hope you speak Spanish.

The app I use for after-the-fact notifications of earthquakes is simply called Earthquake. It tells me, for example, that we had a 3.3 temblor just off Zihuatanejo's coast at 3:34 this morning.

I'll take another look at it. When it first came out I tried it, but SkyAlert was better at the time so I uninstalled it. Thanks for reminding me.

*followup* Yep, that alarm will wake the dead all right.
