Dumped Dog

by Talley Ho @, Playa la Ropa, Monday, December 22, 2014, 18:47 (4269 days ago)

Someone dumped a nice dog on La Ropa yesterday. Pregnant, of course. Friendly, agreeable. Looks like a cross between a chocolate lab and an Xoloitzcuintle, the hairless dog. She probably weighs about 35 pounds.
We'd like to take her in for spay and help finding a home. We want to make sure they will take her before we take her to them.
How do we contact the animal group? Know where they are, but don't use the phone here.
We already have 2 dogs, one a La Ropa dog, and our neighbors have 3, two La Ropa dogs.
Thanks for any help.

I don't know about the phone, but whether SPAZ will take the dog depends on if they have room. We took a pregnant dog there about 2 years ago. We gave them some money -- as I recall, around $400 pesos. They spayed the dog (which of course meant losing the puppies) and kept her for a few days. Fortunately, we knew someone who wanted her and they came and picked her up. Otherwise, I think they might have turned her loose on the street. Simply because they did not have space to keep her. I know that things are very tight for them financially. Good luck!

The space issue is why we are asking about their situation, we don't want to haul her in and find out they don't have room at the inn.
We made a significant contribution when we arrived in November. It's important!!

Katherine, it really upsets me that you would speak of this organization the way you just did. SPAZ has done so much for Zihuatanejo. You speak about them as if they through dogs in the gutter.

Check them out on Facebook. Read about all of the success stories.

SPAZ needs food, collars. leashes but most of all money. They do need to expand. Donations would help them get the extra space they need.

I am very passionate about this organization so please donate not just one time but do it on an annual basis.

I have donated many times, and also volunteered. This does not change the fact that animals will be released by SPAZ if they are not adopted and there is no room for them. The workers there have told me this. Honestly, is there no end to the self-righteousness on this board? Merry Christmas to all.

We donate annually, and last month brought down and delivered 50 sets of collars and leashes.
Back to my original question: How do we find out if there is room at the inn for her?

Bring the dog there? Have you never been there? They are located right off the basketball court above the boutique stores. Ask any one of the stores for Natalia or SPAZ, they will direct you and the dog upstairs.

the simple way

by jr, Tuesday, December 23, 2014, 13:03 (4268 days ago) @ Talley Ho

Why don't you just go down there and ask????
How is anybody, especially if they are not here in Zihua, know if SPAZ has room?

Not so simple way

Because the combi's had stopped running for the evening.
Because they were closed.
Because we were hoping to, and did, make contact by by e-mail.
Because we were hoping to have an answer fairly quickly.
Yes, we live here, around the corner from you, 5 months a year.

These folks do great work. I just sent them a few bucks---how about the rest of us chipping in to make Christmas a little brighter for their furry kids!

Good idea -- I just made donation.

It really upsets me that you would misinterpret my words and jump on me for no reason. I have volunteered with the spay/neuter campaign. I have donated many times. I simply explained that they do not have room for all of the cats and dogs that people bring to them.

And Dione, your rant at Katherine was really misplaced. They do have limited space and cannot take in all animals. She paid for the spaying and yes, probably if there had not been someone already agreeing to adopt they would have released the dog after spaying it.

I didn't see anything in there that looked like a rant.

I felt like I was being criticized simply for saying that SPAZ sometimes releases animals when they do not have room to keep them. Which is simply the truth. And by a person who assumes that I have done nothing for this organization, when they really know nothing about me. I just wish people would not be so quick to assume the worst.

I did

by LadyM in Zihua, Tuesday, December 23, 2014, 08:15 (4268 days ago) @ katherine

There are many of us who help out with the clinics and donate more than every year. Spaz does what it can, but they are limited by space and with funds. Certainly not perfect but they work hard for the animals.

good to know

Kidlets, I don't think Dione was ranting at anyone. I believe there was simply a slight misunderstanding and that she was passionately putting in a good plug for a noble and hard-working organization she supports, a misunderstanding that has since been clarified the ROUGH way, instead of the NICE & EASY way.

The sweet brown dog was just picked up. Natalia and Judith spent some time with her, said she was young, and they think she will find a home. She rode off with them in their laps, eating treats.

Linda, Talley Ho, from now on to be known as Doggie Detectives, searched the whole situation down and followed through to the end. Great story, great ending, contribute to SPAZ when you can and frequent the restaurants that allow dogs, and boycott the ones that don't (even if you don't have dog,or yours is not with you...)
