El Cambio de EstaZIHones
Seasons of the year are different in the topics, and at our latitude we basically only recognize the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season means cool evenings, clear skies, mild temps, refreshing breezes, and sunny days. At the end of the dry season, in other words NOW, after the yearly marea roja passes, the water usually clears up at the same time it warms up, offering the best swimming of the year, especially for visitors to whom the water doesn't feel as cold as it does to locals. Today the water temperature in Zihuatanejo Bay reached 26°C but seems to have leveled off at 25.5°C. A little warmer each day. Change is in the air. The water is almost warm enough for locals again. Another change in the air is the presence of smoke. Today was the first day that smelled smoky all day long, from dawn to dusk, though very few fires are actually visible, and smoke is not really all that visible in the sky. But today's pink wispy clouds at sunset are typical of this time of year. They'll get more intense and colorful as the amount of smoke in the air increases. The smoke, of course, comes from campesinos burning fields to plant maíz, frijól and calabasa. Some years are worse than others. If we're lucky, the smokiness will stay like it is now, barely noticeable. But I've lived through some really bad years here where it looks like a war zone where everyone lost, where the other side of the bay is a faint outline, and even the mountains disappear. It's common for fishermen to get lost at sea for being unable to see landmarks. Even the sun becomes difficult to locate in the grayish-whiteness of a smoke-filled sky. I used to always use a compass on such days at sea, but I don't think most panga fishermen even carry one (though someone stole mine). There are few sights more disheartening than being at sea and seeing so much smoke over the land that it looks like nothing living could possibly breathe and survive. We've been fortunate so far this burning season. The weather has been absolutely picture-postcard-perfect every single day. Keeping fingers crossed.
Hardly any tourists around today. A few were enjoying Playa Principal and playing in the waves from the mar de fondo. I've never understood why people like to stand right where the wave breaks and get hit over and over, but to each their own. It seems to be what people think they're supposed to do at the beach here.
Whether you want to go whale watching, sportfishing, sightseeing or snorkeling, my friend Capitán Ramón Olea of the panga Oleaje offers an affordable adventure waiting to be enjoyed. Ramón knows all the local fishing and snorkeling spots as well as what else is worth seeing. His 24' covered panga doesn't offer much luxury, but his expertise in fishing and his local knowledge of our coast and its marine life is second to none! Ramón practices "catch and release" fishing when possible.
