It ain't nonsense, it's simply a mental block for too many Canadians and U.S. citizens to accept that they've been prolonging a historical grammatical error. There is no nation named America, and "American" is not a nationality; it's a reference to people and things from a continent named America, like Asian, African, European, Australian. People from the USA need to think real hard and come up with their own demonym. Statesiders, United Staters, United Statesians, USAayers.
