There in no Continent “America”

My high school geography and university geology and university geophysics/astronomy courses are far in my history, but I do have vague recollections of them.

My recollections are consistent that there is no continent of America. North America is on a tectonic plate, so there is a North America. South America is on a different tectonic plate. So South America is a continent. Then there was some geological activity and a third land mass arose. But North America and South America remain on their individual tectonic plates.

I suggest it is proper to refer generally to the inhabitants of Canada, and the inhabitants of Mexico, and the inhabitants of the land between them as being “North Americans”.

I suggest it is proper to refer specifically to an inhabitant of Canada, by their preferred term which might be, Canadian and/or Québécois.

I suggest it is proper to refer specifically to the inhabitants of Mexico as Mexicano, Mexicans, or Mexicanx, as they might prefer.

I suggest it is proper to refer specifically to the inhabitants of the land between them as being American if that is what they prefer.
