Crocodile capture
Thanks, KO. Great story & photos!
Odd that the beach where they are removing this croc from is one where folks aren't supposed to swim due to the bacteriological health risk, so what is the reason for removing an animal that is simply looking to be left alone? It should pose little to no risk to anyone, especially if there were simple signs located near the estuaries with the 3 basic rules everyone who's ever lived around saurians should know.
- 1) Respect their space and they will respect yours. They seek no attention from humans and only want to feel safe in their own areas. If one is trying to return to its estuary from the ocean please don't stand between it and the entrance to the estuary.
- 2) Do not harass, provoke or bother them. If you do then you teach them that humans pose a threat.
- 3) Do not feed them. If you do then you teach them that humans are a source of food.
As to what they do with them, Protección Civil takes them to a lagoon near the airport that is already overpopulated with crocs, so since the crocs will now have to learn to compete more for food and territory we are essentially making them more aggressive and causing them to pose more of a danger: the very thing we DON'T want them to become (humans are NOWHERE near as smart as we think we are). I strongly disagree with the local government's policy of removing them whenever someone calls in a sighting (so PLEASE don't call in croc sightings to the Bomberos). The local crocs are normally nowhere near as aggressive as the gators in Florida, and in Florida folks have learned to coexist rather well with the gators, so I believe coexisting with the crocs here who exist in much lesser numbers here than the gators in Florida should be a piece of cake, but as usual we're blowing it by thinking we must dominate and control our environment.
