You guys are exactly right on this. Not having local insurance in the event of an accident can be a real nightmare. The Mexican system mostly requires payment for damages right then and there. You don't get to go home and then get a bill later. Also, liability disputes in local courts are notoriously contentious and slow to be resolved. Gringo visitors are at a huge disadvantage.
